Welcome to

Western North Carolina

Home to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, Western North Carolina showcases breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. Spanning an area nearly the size of Massachusetts, the region is home to over 43 peaks topping 6,000 feet and is frequently known as the “Gateway to the Smokies.” This Appalachian landscape invites visitors to explore its quaint mountain towns, lush forests, easily accessible rivers, and awe-inspiring waterfalls.

Anchored by Asheville, its largest city, Western North Carolina extends from the high country peaks in Beech Mountain and Blowing Rock to the inviting towns of Hickory and Hendersonville in the Piedmont foothills. Mist engulfing the Appalachian Mountains as they reach into the clouds hints at why this region is also known as the “Land of the Sky.”

The vibrant culture of Western North Carolina thrives on local craftsmanship and traditional music. The town of Hickory is renowned for its handcrafted furniture, while local festivals echo to the sounds of bluegrass and old-time string bands.

Travelers also visit this region for year-round recreation and scenic drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds its way across Western North Carolina toward Virginia. Ski enthusiasts can hit the slopes in Boone while hikers flock here to tackle rugged sections of the Appalachian Trail.

With a plentitude of rivers and waterfalls, thrill-seekers enjoy navigating the whitewater rapids of the Nantahala River, and numerous waterways offer ideal spots for kayaking, canoeing, or hitting nearby trails.

In addition to its rugged wilderness, Western North Carolina has a deeply rooted historical legacy. Indigenous Cherokee communities have inhabited these mountains for thousands of years, shaping the early cultural landscape. Later, European settlers brought distinct Appalachian folk traditions that remain visible today. George Vanderbilt’s Biltmore Estate in Asheville stands as a prominent, grand monument to Gilded Age architecture and late 19th-century history.

Experience the perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and welcoming mountain hospitality in Western North Carolina.
