Welcome to

South Fork

At the confluence of the South Fork and Rio Grande Rivers in Colorado’s southern Rocky Mountains, the small mountain community of South Fork serves as an all-season basecamp for outdoor adventure. Surrounded by the majestic San Juan Mountains and nearly two million acres of national forest, South Fork boasts a rugged, breathtaking landscape, with easy access to ski runs, scenic byways, history, and family-adventure.

This southwestern Colorado town serves as a prime basecamp for winter sports enthusiasts. The incredible powder at Wolf Creek Ski Area near Pagosa Springs is located just 30 minutes away. Notably, the drive from South Fork to Wolf Creek is less curvy and not as steep as from the western side, making it an easier winter trek. Additionally, Purgatory Ski Resort in Durango is accessible within a scenic two-hour drive, giving visitors plenty of alpine options to explore.

Outdoor recreation defines the South Fork experience year-round. When the snow melts, summer brings endless opportunities for off-roading, jeeping, mountain biking, or casting a line into the Rio Grande for Gold Medal trout fishing. With lakes, reservoirs, and white-water rapids all nearby, adventure seekers can take on class II-III rapids or enjoy the solitude of paddling across quiet stretches of water.

South Fork serves as a convenient and peaceful retreat for city dwellers. A large majority of visitors travel from urban hubs like Denver, Albuquerque, and various cities across Texas to escape the heat and daily grind.

History buffs will also appreciate the town's roots in the robust logging and mining industries of the late 19th century. The historic Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad once transported timber and ore directly through this valley, heavily shaping the early economic development of the region. Drive the Silver Thread Scenic Byway as it winds its way past old mining and logging camps, stagecoach stops, and railways.

Experience the breathtaking scenery, outdoor thrills, and rich history of southwestern Colorado at the headwaters of the Rio Grande. Plan your unforgettable South Fork adventure.
