About

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens lets you step away from the usual vacation routine and enjoy the beauty of nature. Walk under tall banyan trees, admire thousands of orchids and rare tropical plants, and explore everything at your own pace.

The Gardens started as a heartfelt gift from one of Florida’s pioneering women—Marie Selby. In 1971, Marie Selby donated her seven-acre bayfront estate to become a public garden after she passed away. She hoped the community would enjoy the beauty she loved. The gardens opened in 1975 and have since become known worldwide for research and conservation.

Today, the gardens are known for their collection of epiphytes—air plants and orchids that grow on other plants. Scientists study and protect these species, while visitors can simply enjoy the scenery. There are two campuses to explore: Downtown Sarasota and Historic Spanish Point in nearby Osprey.

After exploring the gardens, enjoy a meal at Ophelia’s on the Bay, which is both casual and elegant. You can also visit the nearby John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art for even more to discover. With so many choices, you can plan your day just the way you like.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens: Fun Facts & Cool Features

The Downtown Sarasota campus has one of the world's largest public displays of orchids and bromeliads. It’s a dream spot for plant lovers and a great place for photographers.

The Green Orchid Restaurant at the Downtown campus is the world’s first net-positive energy restaurant. It creates more energy than it uses and serves fresh, seasonal food.

Historic Spanish Point dates back thousands of years. This campus protects archaeological sites, a pioneer-era chapel, and gardens with views of Little Sarasota Bay. It feels like both an outdoor museum and a living history lesson.

Both campuses offer changing art exhibits, seasonal shows, and quiet spots for relaxing afternoons. Visiting Selby Gardens during your Siesta Key trip adds something unique. After time on the famous quartz-sand beaches, the gardens give you a refreshing break, mixing science, art, and nature for a memorable family outing.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens also hosts the Orchid Show, turning the Downtown Sarasota campus into a colorful and fragrant display of rare and exotic orchids. Whether you know a lot about orchids or just love the colors, this show is a treat for the senses.

With two garden locations, an on-site restaurant, annual events, and an array of flowers and trees to explore, a visit to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens promises to enhance your Siesta Key getaway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Siesta Key is an exceptional destination for year-round sun and fun, though there are some tips for picking the right time for you.

Visitors to Siesta Key will see an influx of snowbirds and Spring Breakers from January to March. The shoulder seasons (April - May and September-October) are a wonderful time to take advantage of smaller crowds and milder weather, though September and October can see some storm activity as hurricane season wraps up.

November and December are typically moderate, as visitors and seasonal residents stay up north for the holidays. The combination of heat, humidity, and summer storms make summers the low season, though it is a popular time for families to visit on school breaks.

Most visitors fly into Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, just 20 minutes away. Tampa International Airport sits about an hour north. From either airport, a short drive over the bridges from Sarasota lands you right on the island.

Siesta Key itself is a charming, walkable island that also offers a variety of free trolley services plus easy access to ridesharing. Many guests also find walking and biking easy within the village and beach areas. A car can be helpful if you want to explore Sarasota and nearby attractions.

Be sure to attend the Sunday Drum Circle at sunset which has been a local tradition since 1996. The island also hosts the Siesta Fiesta arts festival, the Crystal Classic Sand Sculpting Festival, and lively seafood celebrations throughout the year.

The calm, shallow Gulf waters, soft, cool sand, and family-friendly restaurants make it a top choice for families. Additionally, many of our vacation rentals offer the space and amenities that turn a trip into a relaxed family getaway.
