About

Bird Island, also known as Isla San Jorge, is a spectacular rocky island located about 30 miles off the coast of Rocky Point. If you’re only going to take one tour during your trip, make it this one! You’ll enjoy incredible wildlife viewing combined with fun on-the-water activities in one unforgettable day.

About the Tour

Tours typically depart early in the morning (around 7–8 a.m., depending on the season) for the scenic two-hour boat ride each way. The journey is well worth it. Upon arrival, you’ll see hundreds of sea lions sunbathing on the rocks from a safe, respectful distance. The surrounding waters are also teeming with birds and fish, creating a true nature lover’s paradise.

This family-friendly excursion is an all-inclusive adventure. In addition to round-trip transportation, you’ll have the chance to kayak or snorkel with provided gear. Lunch is included, making the overall cost very reasonable for a full-day experience. Be sure to pack a swimsuit, change of clothes, hat, sunscreen, and your camera — this is a photographer’s dream!

The Eco Fun Adventures tour includes lunch, snacks, beverages, and an open bar. Snorkeling is usually offered during the warmer months, while kayaking is a great option in cooler weather.

The Island & Wildlife

Designated a Federal Reserve in 1978, Isla San Jorge is home to Mexico’s largest colony of sea lions and seals, along with abundant birdlife including Brown Pelicans, Blue-footed Boobies, and Swallows. The island earns its nickname “Bird Island” from the thousands of birds that cover the rocks and fill the skies above.

With a bit of luck and perfect timing (especially during winter whale-watching season), you may also spot whales and dolphins along the way.

Tour Companies

Several reputable boats offer trips to Bird Island for snorkeling and sea lion viewing, with excursions typically lasting 4–6 hours. Two standout options are Eco Fun Adventures and Del Mar Charters, both known for experienced captains and crews who keep the day fun, safe, and educational. Other solid choices include Pancho Villa Charters and Federico’s Charters. We especially recommend Eco Fun Adventures for their excellent service and value.
