About
When your crew prefers a more laid-back beach setting that is family-friendly, look no further than Destiladeras Beach.
It's long been regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches on the Riviera Nayarit, with a truly timeless quality. The name comes from the Spanish word for 'distiller' (destilador), and it refers to the freshwater springs that used to bubble up behind the dunes, providing water for early settlers and indigenous people. Today it's a beach celebrated for its beauty, its waves, and its relaxed vibe; you can easily imagine it as a world away from any of the more commercialized resort areas.
Destiladeras has grown over the years from a fairly quiet local secret into a real gem for families, surfers and anyone who just wants to get away to the coast. The vast expanse of sand is ideal for beach games, long walks and building the mostmagnificent sandcastles. There's plenty of shallow, clear water right out to sea, so it's very safe for all comers to swim in, and the waves are consistent and quite gentle, so they're perfect for beginners both on the surfboard and the bodyboard. The beach is still very much in its natural state, largely undeveloped. There are a few palapas for shade, a couple of basic restaurants offering fresh seafood and cold drinks, and loads of local vendors selling snacks.
Destiladeras is also renowned for its spectacular sunsets, with the sky typically blazing in shades of pink and orange as the sun goes down over the Pacific. It's a perfect place to hang out under a palapa, play in the waves, or simply enjoy the beach's tranquillity.
A day at Destiladeras is pure coastal heaven and an essential part of any visit to the Riviera Nayarit.
Destiladeras Beach: Fun Facts & Cool Features
The beach slopes gently, so the tide goes out far, leaving tide pools and sandbars that are ideal for kids to wade out and explore. The quietest time to be on the beach is early in the morning and on the weekdays when you might well have the beach to yourself (a real treat on the Riviera Nayarit).
The waves are consistent, so it's a very popular spot for surf lessons, and there are a number of local instructors who will do lessons on the sand. Paddleboarding and kayaking are also popular with the locals, and there are plenty of operators who will rent you the equipment.
The beach is well known for its community events and beach clean-ups (the locals take great pride in keeping Destiladeras clean). It's a favorite spot with photographers for the open views, the spectacular sunsets, and the occasional dolphin off the coast. Foodies will be after the thatched-roof beachfront restaurants where you can have grilled fish, ceviche and fresh coconut water (served straight from the shell). On weekends and holidays, you might just catch a live music performance or a pop-up artisan market.
Destiladeras Beach is very easy to get to by car or taxi (parking is right on the sand) and yet it still has that feel of being a genuine natural escape. You can just wade in the water, have a picnic with friends, or simply let the day pass, making your own magic.
