About
History comes alive up on the hill at La Contaduría, where the old stone walls and the views are absolutely fantastic, showcasing San Blas's past. It was originally built in the 18th century and was an important part of Spain's colonial days.It was a customs house, a lookout, and a military post. The Spanish built La Contaduría to control and protect the port of San Blas, which was such an important port for trade and for the movement of ships between Mexico, the Philippines, and Spain.
For years, the place was the scene of pirate raids, military expeditions, and the passage of ships bringing in all manner of goods (treasure, missionaries, soldiers, etc.) across the Pacific. The thick stone walls, the arched windows, and theechoing chambers are all still there, and it's a very physical connection to the place's history. The climb up the long path to the top is in itself an adventure, and you get a real sense of the colonial history of Mexico.
