Overview
This Fish Camp cabin is ideally situated less than two miles from Yosemite's south entrance. Big Rock provides the quaintness of a cabin with the modern amenities and comforts of home. The cabin opens to a wrap-around deck where you can cook on the gas grill, dine at the table that seats eight, and take in the gorgeous mountain views with tall pine and cedar trees, and a meadow of ferns. You'll see the seasonal creek, and the giant boulder that was the inspiration for the cabin’s “Big Rock” name. Inside, the open living room has wood-plank walls and a vaulted ceiling, with a wood-burning stove and a flatscreen TV. The kitchen is well equipped. The dining table seats six, with four additional stools at the kitchen bar. The main bedroom opens to a covered deck sitting area. Privately tucked away at the end of the cul-de-sac, this cabin has parking for multiple cars and even a trailer. The cabin is also near the Wawona History Center and 9-hole golf course - the only golf course in a national park. Bass Lake is less than 15 miles away, where you can enjoy boating, skiing, fishing, swimming, hiking, and bicycling. The Pines Village at the lake provides restaurants, a general market, bars, shops, and a full-service marina with rental boats, jet skis, and kayaks. The town of Oakhurst is also nearby, with shopping, restaurants, bars, a movie cinema, and a live stage theater. Bass Lake is less than 15 miles from the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park. Bass Lake reaches its peak water levels in the summer months and is lowered by 50 percent during the fall and winter months annually. Because of this summer water levels vary each year depending on the winter season rain and snowfall. The place is right next to Yosemite national park.
The one positive of this rental is the proximity to the entrance to Yosemite National Park. However, that does not make up for the difficulties that we had. Upon our arrival the fridge was room temperature. The guidance we received from the checkin instructions was that it could take up to 24 hours for the fridge to cool off! We had already stayed at two other rentals on our trip prior to this one and neither fridge needed time to cool before using it. We reached out to Vacasa customer service 3 hours later when it was clear the fridge was not working. They said they would have a technician out the next morning to look at the fridge. however, it was not until 4pm the following day that we learned the fridge needed a new fan and it would take a week for the part to arrive. When we asked for a replacement fridge (even a mini-fridge would have been better than nothing), we were told that was not possible, but we would receive a refund to account for any of the food we had lost. We had purchased all of the food that we needed for our 5 day/4 nights stay prior to our arrival to the rental because we have two children with severe food allergies and need to purchase specific allergy safe food. We would not be able to eat out at any of the restaurants in the area and would need to cook all of our meals. For this reason we intentionally chose a rental with a full kitchen - including a fridge. We had to take time out of our vacation at the National Park to drive 30 minutes away to replace food that we lost, purchase a hard sided cooler and ice to keep perishables cold. When I reached out on 2 occasions to the local VACASA representative about how much the refund would be, I received no response. I finally called the 1-800 # on the day we checked out and learned we would be refunded $60 which in no way accounted for the loss of food, time taken to replace food, the cost of gas ($6/gallon!) to drive to the nearest larger town to replace food, the cost of a cooler and ice, and the overall inconvenience of not having a working fridge during our stay. Frankly, it was an insult. We eventually got VACASA to refund us $185 but that too was insufficient for the headache we endured. In addition, two of the beds were missing top sheets when we arrived. When we requested them, we were given 1 top sheet and 1 fitted sheet. When I reached out again, I got no response. The rest of the home was adequate for our needs and accommodated our group of 4 adults and 4 kids. However, the kitchen and bathrooms are dated. Bottom line - If you are looking for a rental which responds promptly and adequately to major and minor issues that arise, look elsewhere!!
We enjoyed the proximity to the park and the ability to get some relaxation in the evenings.
This was a great house. Easy to find. Clean and stocked with cooking items. Beds were comfortable which was great after long days of hiking in Yosemite. Location was great being minutes from the entry to park and having the general store at bottom of hill for drinks, ice, and snacks and a pizza/restaurant just minutes up the road. Would recommend bringing a cooler with food since closest real grocery store was 30 minutes to town.
We loved everything! What a gorgeous location, very comfy for our family of six. Each couple had a room and there were also three bathrooms. We all had plenty of space. We enjoyed cooking family dinners, and using the gas grill on the deck, a lovely living room with a warm wood-burning stove, finished out the nights. This Home is about a 45 minute drive to the iconic tunnel view, it’s also right near the Mariposa Grove, and within 15 minutes of bass Lake for those who want to fish. We found it to be an excellent location for all that we were doing over a long weekend. Vacasa was great to communicate with, and we truly had everything we needed. The master bedroom mattress was extremely comfortable, and each room had plenty of blankets and box fans. We would recommend this to anyone!
