The neighborhood: Keaau sits along the Big Island’s lush Puna Coast, south of Hilo, where rural roads pass rainforest, lava landscapes, and dramatic shoreline. A car is essential here, but it opens up a rewarding mix of coastal lookouts, black-sand beaches, and Hilo’s farmers market and local restaurants. Shipman Beach is nearby for turtle watching, while Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park makes a memorable day trip. This is a quieter, more rural part of the island for families who prefer sea cliffs and tropical greenery over a busy resort scene.

Getting around: Hilo International Airport is about 20 minutes away, a quick and easy drive. A rental car is recommended for reaching the Puna coast's beaches and Hilo's shopping and dining just down the road. Keaau itself is a small community with a modest walkable center, so most errands call for a short drive. Parking is generally simple and available on site.
