Lahaina Harbor offers incredible whale watching tours and the chance to spot humpback whales during the winter months.

The neighborhood: Papakea is in the Honokowai area of West Maui, a coastal stretch just north of Kaanapali with a more relaxed, local pace. Honokowai Beach is nearby for a swim or a shoreline walk, and neighborhood markets and casual restaurants make it easy to pick up poke, fruit, or dinner without a long drive. Kaanapali's beach and Whalers Village are farther south, while Kapalua's bays and trails are up the coast. It is a practical base for couples and small families who want West Maui beaches close at hand.

Getting around: Kahului Airport (OGG) is about 40 to 45 minutes from the Lahaina area along Maui's west side. A rental car is recommended for beaches, shopping, and dining along the coast, including Kaanapali and Kapalua. Nearby beaches may be just minutes away, but most destinations require driving. Parking is typically available in designated lots, though popular beaches and restaurants can fill up.
