Overview
Bayfront and perfectly rustic in the best ways, Saganook was built in 1902 as a summer retreat and studio space for a then-famous woodcarver and sculptor. The interior boasts eclectic decor, exposed ceilings, and a spacious layout that will allow everyone to find their own favorite place to hang out in a classic Maine setting! This four cottage compound conveniently located in Brunswick sits on Middle Bay, so you won't have to go far to kayak or boat on calm waters. Some eagles often hang out in the trees on the property and on the rocks, so keep an eye out for them! Located on a peninsula with 1,200 feet of private waterfront allows you the space to unwind and relax or enjoy the large grassy yard to take a nap in the hammock. This private waterfront also includes both remarkable climbing rocks and a pebble beach!
The large cottage offers two full bedrooms, a sleeping loft, and one and a half bathrooms. Spend time gathering on the sun porch or covered deck. The kids will love the experience of sleeping in one of the two cabins that come from a classic Maine summer camp. The first building, the 'boys cabin,' has two twin beds which may be put together to make a king should a couple want to sleep there. The 'girls cabin' is the same layout and located just a few steps from the boys. A larger outbuilding, the 'Holmes cabin' offers a double bed and two twin beds. These three cabins share a bathroom and shower facility accessed from the yard. The fifth building is a spacious studio perched on the rocks with water a few feet away on three sides. Enjoy the view from the back porch of the entire bay leading out to the ocean with islands in the distance. It is a favorite spot for everyone who stays at the property.

My family gathered again this summer at Saganook. We had a wonderful week, kayaking, swimming, reading and cooking big meals. We really appreciate how easy it is to set up tables and chairs on the screened porch for a group dinners. Our dogs loved the giant lawn. We had a couple of cool days and the lodge was a cozy place to read and play cards. It's a simple and rustic place, so you need to like that vibe. We do. The view from the porch is gorgeous. i will think of it all winter long.
The location of Saganook is perfect. Directly on the water with an expansive lawn, it feels very private and yet it is 10-15 minutes from everything you need. The setup with the cabins makes it possible for everyone to have a "little retreat" when needed, and the early risers don't bother the late sleepers, which is how it should be on vacation. We made use of everything; the hammocks, the fire pit, corn hole, the screened in porch, and mostly those rockers on the front porch! (We never, however, turned on the tv). We were visited daily by eagles, osprey, heron , egrets and others (if you don't have the Merlin app on your phone, you should try it). In the area, I highly recommend a visit to the Giant Stairs, the Maine Summer Music Theater, the Dolphin Marina and Morse's food truck. But still allow plenty of time for those rocking chairs!!
The house and property was great! Check in wasn’t. We traveled 3+ hours to be told we were supposed to get an email saying our check in time was changed from 4 to 5:30. Wouldn’t really work, since we had picked up a hannaford to go and were tired when we arrived at 3:55. After calling, cleaners arrived at 5:30 and were there until 7. All beds had dirty linens, pile of dirty towels in the bathroom, trash and recycling left for us from the previous week. We attempted to clean the best we could, but honestly didn’t know what it should look like. Cleaner (1 guy) was awesome, I think his name was dj. But seriously overwhelmed. House itself was nice. Path to beach is impassable for most people.
We loved everything about our stay at Saganook! The property is quiet and peaceful with breathtaking views. We had 5 young children that enjoyed exploring the property and spent full days playing in the yard. The water was surprisingly warm and we loved taking the kayaks out around the bay. We enjoyed having enough separate spaces but also a large screen porch where we could enjoy our dinners all together. As another reviewer has mentioned, it is more rustic, so if you are looking for luxury, this might not be the best place for you. Thank you for sharing this wonderful property!
We loved the rustic charm, history and family lived-in feel of this place. We loved the cabins and studio - plenty of privacy. We loved the convenient location to grocery stores. We loved the lawn for games. The big screen for family movie night. Swimming in Middle Bay, warmer than I expected. Canoeing and kayaking. Watching the terns, eagles, osprey, herons, egrets, occasional seals, and especially the family of phoebes just outside the kitchen door. Kitchen is small but with plenty of utensils, dishes, tools, pots and pans. Our group of 11, ages 3 to 68, loved our time here.
We spent a wonderful week at Saganook. It was fascinating to read the history about the old house. There was plenty of space for our extended family, and we especially enjoyed the little cabins. The house is well-appointed and well-stocked. We enjoyed the outdoor shower. It was amazing to be able to kayak right from the property. We saw eagles and seals on our early morning paddles. Thank you for sharing this special place. We can't wait to return.
