Overview

Make this quaint dog-friendly cottage in Boothbay your home away from home for your next coastal Maine vacation. This house is the former residence of sea captain, John Kent, who built it in 1832 and was also the site of the Sawyer Island Art Studio where artist Joseph Bailey Ellis whose sculptures are still on exhibit at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. This deep history is treasured and so the house purposefully retains some of its original vintage touches of antiques, glassware, and authentic ambiance while adding many modern conveniences for your enjoyment. Curl up with a good book after a day of activities, or head out across the Grand Lawn to the Boathouse where you can sit and relax to the rise and fall of tides. This is also a great place to grab a beverage and get ready to be wowed by the stunning sunset views across the wide expanses of the water that surround the property on all three sides. For an even closer experience, the adjacent private dock awaits you and your kayaks for a paddle and exploration of nature’s family including the fun-loving seals, seabirds, and other feathered, finned and furred sun-seekers. The 2.5-acre property has well-maintained lawns and shade trees for peaceful walks or for frisbee and ball games as there is lots of room to spread out. Additionally, you will notice a portion of the property that is now dedicated to periled pollinators that are sadly on a national decline. There you can stroll along the mowed pathways to discover Maine native wildflowers where butterflies abound (seasonally). We are proud to be members of the national programs, Monarch Watch and Firefly Watch, and support their connection to organic and sustainable practices and citizen science. Nature guides pamphlets for hiking in the area and for these programs and others are available in the house. The First Floor of this 1664 square foot home includes the kitchen, butler pantry, dining room and family room, as well as a ¾ Bathroom with a soaking tub, and one bedroom with one Double Bed. Period pieces and antiques abound in every room. The Second Floor has one bedroom with Two Twin Beds as well as a King Bed, one bedroom with two Twin Beds, and the fourth bedroom has One Queen Bed. A ¾ bathroom with shower completes the second floor of this Sawyer's Island gem.

Excellent home for a friend trip to Maine. Very old and rustic but it has a lot of charm. The boathouse really made the whole stay worth it. Very relaxing and calming atmosphere. The stairs to the second floor are very steep and narrow so if anyone has mobility issues this may not be the best fit, but there is one bedroom and full bath on the first floor as well.

You'll either love or hate the patina of history of this home, but you can't deny that it's a great location with lots of nearby tourist attractions. The property is right on an ocean inlet and we enjoyed the wonderful views from the chairs in the backyard and the boathouse right on the water. The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens are right up the street and well worth a visit. The town of Boothbay Harbor is filled with things to do...we recommend taking part of one of the Cabbage Island Clambakes, which includes a narrated boat ride around the harbor and various islands in addition to a traditional twin lobster meal.

Idyllic location. The physical structure is in disrepair. I would not come back to this property and do not recommend to anyone with small children or older adults as the property presents many hazards and dangers.

This quaint colonial home was absolutely phenomenal! I have never been more relaxed on vacation. The breeze is blowing across the property at all. Times are absolutely wonderful and the views are breathtaking. Plenty of room to spread out. The kids had so much fun playing in the yard and down by the beach and the dock. Truly a wonderful experience! Thank you so much!!

Love the antique house. Very cute.

The house was like going back in time. Peaceful, quiet location with gorgeous views. One double bed and full bath are on the ground floor. Upstairs bedrooms are for younger people as the stairs are very steep and uneven. We stayed with four generations. The consensus was this home was “perfect.”
