Welcome to 2nd Base on Lake Michigan, the grandest of the five Great Lakes. Nestled in Sawyer, MI in the private community of Shorewood Hills, this spacious and unique property consists of a main house and a separate guest house overlooking the lake. You will fall in love with the private beach, the sound of crashing waves, the spectacular sunsets, the stunning views of Lake Michigan, and 2nd Base of course! All of this provides a great venue for a relaxing holiday that will bring you back to nature. Best yet, it is only one-and-a-half hours from Chicago. The three-story main house has six bedrooms and five bathrooms accompanied by multiple living areas overlooking Lake Michigan. The entire home is bathed in natural light, and guests will enjoy the expansive lake views and light coming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights throughout the house. The open-concept main floor has a large kitchen featuring an island with an electric cooktop, two sinks, a dishwasher, a garbage compactor, and a buffet area. There is a lovely dining area attached to the spacious kitchen with a large custom-made maple round table that seats 12-14 guests. A comfortable living area with a sectional sofa, a mounted flatscreen TV, and a maple table for four completes the living area. From this space, guests have access to a terrace complete with comfortable patio furniture and a gas grill. It's an ideal location for barbecuing while savoring the stunning Lake Michigan sunsets. You'll find two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds, and a full bath with a shower/tub combo on this level as well. On the second level, guests can enjoy another spacious living area with floor-to-ceiling windows offering beautiful lake views and lots of comfortable seating around the flatscreen TV. Another large terrace invites you to enjoy the colorful sunsets, the majestic rising moon, and often the lights of Chicago across the lake. Two bedrooms are housed on this level, both bedrooms furnished with queen beds and en-suite bathrooms with shower/tubs. The lower level has a nice living area with floor-to-ceiling windows. A large private primary suite offers a sitting area, a spacious bedroom with built-in maple closets and an en-suite bathroom with double sinks and a shower/tub. A second bedroom with a bathroom with a shower and a laundry room complete this level. The guest house is perfect for children or adults who are still young at heart. This fun red, white, and blue haven has a kitchen and a small eating area. There are two bedrooms with two sets of bunk beds each, a bathroom with a shower, a TV, and a second washer and dryer. A large terrace, complete with a gas grill, patio furniture, a hot tub, a half bath, and two outdoor showers, separate the Main House from the Guest House. We had such a wonderful three-generation reunion with our children and grandchildren at this home. The location on the lake was absolutely perfect and sunsets were stunning. We also enjoyed the neighborhood amenities and activities nearby including wineries, antiques, and more.
Great location but house is tired and needs an upgrade.
We had a great stay for 5 adults and 4 kids. I would recommend the house based on the sunset views over Lake Michigan and the ease of access to the most gorgeous beach! It was a great location and not far from New Buffalo. The house itself was a little bit dated, but generally comfortable. Everything was clean enough, but I feel like the floors could have used a better mopping before arrival. We had an issue with the pots and pans being unusable - the coatings were scratched and burned off. The management quickly had a new set delivered to the house. I am not sure why it took us complaining to have pans that didn't look like they were 80 years old... The other issue was the toilet in the downstairs Primary Bedroom. It didn't work - even after they sent a plumber to 'fix' it. Some of the beach accessories were broken, yet remained in the shed. it would make sense for the homeowner to go ahead and remove non-functioning chairs + umbrellas. We were fine because we brought our own. The last thing was the bedroom layout. The two upstairs bedrooms and one downstairs bedroom have en suite bathrooms. The 2 bedrooms on the middle level and one downstairs bedroom don't have attached bathrooms. We did not use the bunk bedrooms in the attached building on the deck.
Really great location, spacious, and easy one minute trek to beach. However, it was rather dirty. Stained sheets, visible dirt and crumbs on floors and tables, food left in the fridge, etc. If it was a clean home it would have been a very nice place to stay in for a week!
The house was perfect for our large family. We loved the huge kitchen table, the top floor gathering space, and the easy access to the private beach. A few minor updates would make the house 5 stars.
We love this rental. We have stayed in many rentals on Lake Michigan and we all agree this is the Winner!!! Views are stunning and the access to the beach and lake are right on the property. The house is very clean which was a must. The hot tub although small was hot and so relaxing! The home is comfortable and homey. Thanks for sharing this little piece of heaven!!
