From San Francisco, the drive is about 2.5 hours via Highway 101 to Highway 1. Fly into Santa Rosa's Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS), about 90 minutes east, and drive the coast from there. Having a car opens up the entire Mendonoma Coast.

Whale watching season runs from December through April -- grab the binoculars and watch for gray whale spouts from your window. Spring wildflowers (April-June) blanket the coastal headlands and the banks of the Gualala River with vibrant color. Summer on the Mendonoma Coast (June-September) means warm days and the occasional morning fog that burns off by lunch. Cell service can be spotty along the coast.
