Rating
This was an adequate home that enabled us to enjoy Avon and the beach. But it lacked attention to visitors needs and nice touches that would justify higher ratings. The internet didn’t work, there were no coffee filters, there was unfinished drywall and some rooms looked very old. On the positive side, it was close to the beach, shops, and restaurants. We wouldn’t stay there again unless there were no better choices available:
We love Avon and have been staying in the area for years. The house has most of what you need but the housekeeping team needs additional training. Nothing seemed clean upon arrival. Once we cleaned it ourselves, we had a great time.
A stench hit us in the face upon arriving & lingered even after we cleaned, changed the filthy air filter and sprayed odoban. Leaks under kitchen sinks required catch basins[ reported locally and through text to no avail], very dirty everywhere- had to wear shoes throughout or feet would be filthy and feel worse, dead and live bugs throughout, backs of bath sink cabinets/behind washer exposed to exterior!, & beds in serious need of replacement. A broken blind prohibited the view. While the interior decor seems nice it was like being in a week-long episode of DIY nightmares. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. The washer was filthy and had to be set just right to operate through an entire cycle. Proximity to the beach was the only plus, and maybe the gas grill. A tent and bathhouse would've been better.
Everything was great
The short walk across the dunes to the reasonably quiet beach is the highlight here (the property has it's own established trail to the beach). Not sure you'll ever get the beach to yourself but you will get plenty of space and it's a beautiful spot. In the property the outdoor shower was very nice, and the pool table kept my son occupied for most of the time we were not on the beach. It's not a big place, but it feels reasonably spacious, and there was plenty of room for our family of 4. The town of Avon itself is small but has everything you need; the Food Lion is a short drive away and has most supplies you will need (it's a good size), Ketch 55 is nearby and is a reasonable restaurant with good seafood and atmosphere, and "Muffins & Scones" is an easy walk away and is a GREAT coffee/bagel/cake place. I'd also recommend the nearby surf shop ("Ride Hatteras Surf Shop") - they have some great Avon surf t-shirts if you are looking for a souvenir (as well as a large selection of surf gear).
Overall, having a house right on the beach was nice. The path to the beach was clean and not too far of a walk to the beach. The house could use some updating, the beds were not the most comfortable. Kitchen is nice and updated. Outdoor shower is not usable and the grill was also not cleaned. Nice location in Avon.
