What our guests are saying...
Historic Cottage at Summerhaven delivers a memorable, authentic coastal retreat with distinctive historic character and a lovingly preserved, restful atmosphere. Guests find the cottage comfortable, with thoughtfully updated features complementing its original wood floors, fireplace, and wraparound porches; it is also praised as spotless and well maintained. Its secluded oceanfront setting offers a peaceful, private-feeling beach experience with convenient beach access. Guests enjoy sweeping sunrise and sunset views from the lookout and upper covered deck, along with relaxing spaces on the surrounding porches.
Overview
Professionally managed by Casago First Coast. A white clapboard cottage from the 1880s, standing behind the dune at Summer Haven with a two-storey lookout tower and a coquina stone chimney. Inside, very little has been modernised away — original wooden door frames, low doorways, painted board walls, and a ceiling opened up to its white-painted rafters. Light comes in from three sides through banks of windows onto heart-pine floors, with vintage blue-and-white rattan chairs pulled up to a rough stone fireplace at one end and a long farmhouse table at the other. Summer Haven is a small, old coastal community on the narrow strip south of St. Augustine — no resorts, no crowds, and a beach guests routinely describe having to themselves. One recent guest wrote that it feels like something out of a Hemingway novel.

The Space
Very little here has been modernised away, and that is the point. Original wooden door frames, low doorways, painted board walls, and a ceiling opened up to its white-painted rafters.
The main room runs the width of the cottage with windows on three sides, so it is full of light from sunrise onward. Furniture is old-Florida rather than showroom: slipcovered sofas, blue-and-white rattan armchairs, a yellow painted trunk for a coffee table. The coquina stone fireplace anchors one end, with a long farmhouse table and mismatched painted chairs at the other.
A two-storey lookout tower rises off the front of the cottage to an open observation deck under a terracotta-tiled roof, reached by an exterior stair. It is the best seat in the house for sunrise over the Atlantic.

My husband and I had such a wonderful time at this special beach cottage. The location is very private, safe, and unique, which made our stay peaceful and relaxing. The cottage was spotless, and although it’s a historic home, it has been so well maintained with thoughtful modern touches—especially the updated bathroom—that made it both charming and comfortable. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to extend our stay by an extra day. Customer service was also very responsive and reassuring, though we didn’t need much since everything was well prepared. This was truly a memorable getaway, and we look forward to returning.
This little cottage is great! Great access to the beach! This place is very quiet and relaxing loved every minute of our stay
Feels like old Florida. No frills but a wonderful, comfortable little beach house. Lots of history and character. My favorite place to stay in the area.
Love love love the vibe of this little beach cottage. It’s quirky and older but you honestly can’t get a better location or beach in this area. We had issues with the electronic lock and then the key, but maintenance indicated those would be fixed after we left. Property could use some more outdoor furniture and beach towels. Overall great stay, great location, great house, just a few things that could be a little better. This was our 6th time in either the cottage or the lodge next door and we will definitely be back!
We have stayed at The Historic Hut many many times. Our favorite thing is the 360° view that we get from the lookout. It’s a great place to watch the sunrise as well as the sunset and everything in between. There is a large rock wall along the ocean that makes a Great frame for the sunrise view. The beach access is at the end of the road which is four houses away. This time the blanket flowers were in full bloom and have taken over much of the landscape. Extremely pleasing place to stay.
The Hut is great. Vacasa couldn't address the lavkbof WiFi
