Petenwell Lake

Central Wisconsin is rich with natural beauty with Petenwell Lake as its crown jewel. Created originally by the Petenwell Dam on the Wisconsin River in the 1940s, this 23,000-acre reservoir is framed by dense pine forests and sandy beaches, making it a hotspot for world-class outdoor recreation.

As Wisconsin’s second largest body of water, Lake Petenwell offers ideal conditions for sailing, kayaking, and waterskiing. Just south of Petenwell Dam is Castle Rock Lack, Wisconsin’s 4th largest lake, adding to the wealth of watersports in the region. Today, Petenwell Lake is one of the state’s biggest attractions - along with Wisconsin Dells just about 30 minutes away.

Not only does Petenwell Lake mean fun on the water, it’s one of Wisconsin’s premier watering holes. Anglers visit year-round to catch walleye, musky, and crappie. It is also home to several large fishing tournaments throughout the year, including the spring Musky Tournament.

For history buffs, the lake's connection to Wisconsin's logging industry will be intriguing. During the logging heyday, loggers floated timber south on the Wisconsin River. That all changed in 1948 when the construction of the Petenwell Dam transformed the landscape into a lake to generate hydroelectric power and control flooding. Today, what was once a vibrant industrial past is now a premier recreation destination. In addition, surrounding county parks provide miles of wooded trails for hiking, ATV riding, and snowmobiling during the winter months.

When it comes to dining, Petenwell Lake offers a classic Wisconsin tradition that is a must-try. Local supper clubs around the lake serve famous Friday-night fish fries featuring fresh lake perch and walleye. Also on the menus are local cheese curds, hearty prime rib, and classic Old Fashioned cocktails. With such variety, there's something for even your pickiest eater!

Experience the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and Midwestern hospitality on your next Wisconsin vacation. Discover everything Petenwell Lake has to offer.
