Originally established as a cooperative effort between city, state, and private sectors, Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail was named to honor a local environmentalist whose efforts have helped preserve the area. 

This network of paved trails provides a safe and immersive experience for all ages and skill levels. Here, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts can delve into the heart of the Gulf Coast's environment without leaving the convenience of Orange Beach.

Interweaving through oak hammocks and maintaining a respectful distance from the habitats of rare creatures, the trail offers the thrill of spotting some of Alabama's wildlife in its natural setting.

Among the fantastic feathers in its cap is the Butterfly Garden, alive with fluttering beauties that could captivate any visitor's gaze. This carefully cultivated space allows a close encounter with delicate butterflies, offering a tranquil interlude on the trail journey.

Build fitness alongside nature by taking advantage of the trail's Outdoor Fitness Areas. These stations merge the best of both worlds, bringing together the joy of outdoor exercise and the pleasure of being surrounded by stunning vistas.

Another cool feature is that there is primitive camping at The Outpost. There are three primitive campsites with canvas tents erected on an elevated rustic floor. Also provided are nylon cots, fire pits, and firewood, and a nearby pump sink is available for washing up.

Getting There

Here are step-by-step driving directions from Orange Beach to Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail:

• Start on Perdido Beach Boulevard, heading west towards Gulf State Park.
• Continue straight for approximately 5.4 miles; Gulf State Park will be on your right.
• Turn right onto Orange Beach Blvd/AL-161 N, and continue for about 2.1 miles.
• Make a left onto Canal Road; after 1.3 miles, take a right to stay on Canal Road.
• In approximately 3.7 miles, you will turn left onto AL-180 W/Fort Morgan Road.
• The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is about 0.8 miles down the road, with multiple trailheads easily accessible.
