Oahu

When imagining a Hawaiian getaway, people typically envision beautiful beaches, vivid rainforests, and world-class surfing. On the island of Oahu, green ridges rising behind the capital city of Honolulu further reveal a perfect blend of urban life and natural beauty. From the metropolis-vibe of Waikiki to the legendary surf swells on the North Shore, Oahu offers endless year-round adventure.

Stretching forty-four miles long and only thirty miles across, Hawaii’s third largest island is known as “the Gathering Place.” True to its name, the island provides ideal opportunities for families, couples, and thrill seekers to gather for shared adventures while creating unforgettable memories. Whether it’s the bustling city streets, nightlife, and world-class shopping in Waikiki to serene beach towns on the eastern Windward side of the island, Oahu has something for everyone.

Honolulu, Hawaii’s capital, sits center stage in the southern part of the island. This diverse, cosmopolitan city is where many visitors experience their first glimpse of island life after flying to the remote archipelago located in the north Pacific. In comparison to neighboring islands, Oahu welcomes 60% of visitors that choose Hawaii.

Oahu’s rich history has also transformed it into a cultural hub of the Pacific. This is best reflected in immersive experiences at the famed Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu’s central region. The Center, together with Pearl Harbor and its hallowed sea memorials, make up the two most visited historic sites on the island.

Whether you seek top-rate hiking through lush jungles, swimming under waterfalls in Waimea Valley, feeling the rush of adrenaline at the “Surfing Capital of the World”, or dancing the night away in Waikiki, Oahu is calling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Any time is a good time to visit Oahu, all depending on the vibe and type of experience you’re after. With average annual temperatures ranging from 75˚F-85˚F, trade winds tend to keep things comfortable. Spring (April through June) and Fall (September through November) generally bring great weather and fewer crowds.

Summer is busy and warm, while winter delivers bigger surf on the North Shore and is a popular time for whale watching (with peak times between January through early spring).

The Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu (HNL) is the main airport with direct flights from the mainland, Asia, and other Pacific destinations. From there, rental cars, rideshares, and shuttles make getting around simple.

As opposed to visiting some of the neighboring islands, renting a car is not as necessary on Oahu. This is particularly true if you plan to stay principally along the beaches of Waikiki. Oahu also has a number of public transportation options, or you may consider renting a car for a day to further experience and explore the island.

Popular celebrations on Oahu include the Honolulu Festival in spring, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing in winter, Lei Day Celebration on May 1, and the Aloha Festivals each fall.

Top cultural events in the summer that honor Hawaii’s rich past include the King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade in June and the Prince Lot Hula Festival in July.

U.S. citizens do not need a passport when traveling to Oahu as Hawaii is the country’s 50th state.
