About

While its name could imply zipline courses or amusement arcades, the Aska Adventure Area features 17 miles of trails for mountain biking and hiking. Tucked between the Toccoa River and Lake Blue Ridge in the Chattahoochee National Forest, it’s only 10 miles from the town of Blue Ridge. Such convenience makes it easy to hit the trails in the morning and still have the afternoon to explore other parks or landmarks.

Long before North Georgia became a vacation playground, the Cherokee called these mountains home. The word "Aska" reflects that heritage, translating to “winter house”, summing up the Cherokee's adapting their homes and routines to mountain weather rather than trying to force the landscape to fit human needs. This same spirit abounds today, inviting visitors to connect to the land and disconnect from cell phones and the frantic pace of modern life.

When settlers arrived, the timber industry grew, and logging roads and old trails were cut across the slopes. Many of those routes form the backbone of the today's Aska trail system, connecting adventure seekers with the region's rich past.

While its history is vital, it's the various ecosystems that set it apart. From waterfalls, hardwood forests, trout streams, and overlooks framing the Blue Ridge range, it’s no surprise it was named “Adventure Area.”

Additionally, the Toccoa River winds along one edge, and Lake Blue Ridge holds the other, so water sports and fishing are never far.

For these reasons, it's clear to see why the Aska Adventure Area is one of North Georgia's favorite outdoor playgrounds.

Aska Adventure Area: Fun Facts & Cool Features

The trail network is impressive, with more than a dozen marked trails covering around 17 miles. Let’s check out a few of these.

A popular hike for all ages is the Green Mountain Lakeside Trailhead Trail. This easy 2-mile out-and-back path only climbs 200 feet and offers views of Lake Blue Ridge.

The Long Branch Loop Trail is another family-friendly trek, featuring a 2.3-mile loop with 288 feet of climbing. The well-maintained trail is shaded, making it an ideal hike during warmer seasons.

The Green Mountain and Toccoa River trail will appeal to those who are fit and like a challenge. Rated “moderate” by AllTrails, the 5.9-mile path winds up Green Mountain, ending with 1,171 feet of climbing. Be sure to download the route before arriving, as hikers claim that the painted green trail markers are wearing off.

If you prefer water sports, the Toccoa River runs along the western edge, and it draws anglers chasing trout and paddlers looking for a calm float. The iconic 270-foot Toccoa River Swinging Bridge, one of the longest swinging bridges east of the Mississippi, is nearby and a popular stop.

Lake Blue Ridge borders the eastern side, so kayaking, fishing, and lakeside picnics round out the options. If you need to rent a boat, kayak, canoe, or SUP, check out the gear at Lake Blue Ridge Marina.

While you’re just a short drive away from eateries in Blue Ridge, consider dining at Toccoa Riverside Restaurant. Aside from refreshing, waterside dining, it serves fresh, local rainbow trout! Another hotspot is Van Zandt’s Grill & Grocery, a.k.a. Riverwalk Grill. Here, walk-up service offers juicy burgers, hearty breakfasts, and a porch offering views of the Toccoa River.

With its mix of trails, rivers, lakes, and wildlife, the Aska Adventure Area lives up to its name. Add this outdoor wonderland to your North Georgia vacation to experience nature at its finest.
