Martha's Vineyard

Situated in the Atlantic Ocean seven miles off the Massachusetts coast, Martha's Vineyard sits just off the mainland but can feel like a world away. Six distinct towns across the island offer unique architecture, pristine beaches, and inviting coastal environments. From serene sands for relaxing, coastal paths for biking, bay waters for sailing, and wildlife sanctuaries to explore, there's something for everyone on Martha’s Vineyard.

Originally called Noepe - meaning “land between the streams” - by the Wampanoag tribe, Martha's Vineyard's prominent history dates back to the 1600s, with the arrival of the Pilgrims. Later the island became a major whaling center in the 19th century. The Martha's Vineyard Museum offers extensive exhibits detailing this era. Visitors can also explore this past by touring the grand sea captains' homes in Edgartown.

Aside from its maritime past, Martha’s Vineyard has a creative spirit evident in its numerous art galleries, craft fairs, and local museums. Each community on the island offers a distinctly unique experience for visitors. Start your adventure at Vineyard Haven Village in the town of Tisbury, representing the island’s year-round port. Nearby is West Tisbury, offering a classic New England feel with a renowned summer farmer’s market and one of the most breathtaking spots on the island at Lambert’s Cove Beach.

As you explore the island further, catch the lively atmosphere of Oak Bluffs, home to iconic Victorian “gingerbread” cottages as well as the country’s oldest continuously operating carousel. Stroll through the charming town center of Chilmark, taking in tree-lined roads leading to rolling hills overlooking the ocean. From Edgartown’s historic Main Street and Lighthouse to the westernmost point of the island in Aquinnah and its Circle Cultural District, prepare to be captivated.

After working up an appetite while sightseeing, refuel at any of the outstanding restaurants showcasing fresh seafood like striped bass, bluefish, and oysters. Also available are plenty of farm-to-table restaurants showcasing the island's fresh ingredients.

Enjoy the authenticity and relaxed lifestyle of Martha’s Vineyard on any Massachusetts coastal getaway!
