About

Gypsea Gelato serves tasty handmade dairy and non-dairy treats at three locations:

  1. Kealakekua
  2. Coconut Grove Marketplace
  3. King's Shop

Each store has different hours, so check their website to ensure a particular location is open. We will focus on the Coconut Grove store in Kailua-Kona.

The story of this sweet spot begins at sea. After spending countless hours at sea on commercial fishing and dive boats, Sandra and Tim Heaton knew it was time to put down roots. They chose the Big Island of Hawaii and, in 2014, opened their first Gypsea Gelato store in Kealakekua. Today, the couple manages three locations, over 20 team members, and one central kitchen.

Sandra and Tim pride themselves on using the best ingredients sourced as close to home as possible. They developed relationships with regional farmers to find white pineapple, fresh mint, and lemongrass, to list a few.

Gypsea Gelato offers over 500 handmade gelato flavors, and the menu changes constantly. Visitors will also be pleased to find other options, such as 70% reduced sugar, dairy-free, and sorbet treats.

Additionally, Sandra and Tim help local artisans and businesses by showcasing products in their Kealakekua shop. Coffee, jewelry, and baked goods are available for purchase.

The shop's central location makes combining a tasty treat with an adventure-filled itinerary easy. Consider grabbing a gelato after a snorkeling trip with Captain Zodiac or on your way for an immersive seahorse experience at Ocean Ride Inc. With so many possibilities, the combination of thrills and chilly desserts is endless.

Winner of the "2022 Traveler' Choice" award, Gypsea Gelato offers so many fresh flavors that it is a must-visit on your vacation.

Vibe

The store's quaint exterior and soft green color are inviting. The architectural style matches the adjoining restaurant, giving both a uniform chic look.

Inside, the shiplap walls display art by local artisans while goods and products from local vendors are on display. There was plenty of inside seating, and parents will love the Keiki (Hawaiian for child) Corner for little ones. Kids will love playing in the wooden boat or reading an available book.

The gelato display is mind-boggling, with seemingly countless flavors, many of which are unique. Prime examples are the Haupia Purple Sweet Potato and White Chocolate Ginger Cookie gelatos. They also serve dairy-free and 70% reduced-sugar gelato along with sorbets.

A perk is the free samples to help you narrow down your decision. Once you've ordered your treat, you may dine indoors in the AC or sit outside near the entrance. A back patio with colorful awnings also offers views of the manicured lawn and scenic backdrop.

The relaxing atmosphere is perfect after a day touring the Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation. Be sure to visit on your Hawaiian getaway.

They do have staples that have become fan favorites. These include Mauka Trail, which showcases coffee, a chocolate base with chocolate drizzle, and macadamia nuts. Another example is the Toasted Coconut Haystack, which has a coconut base and chocolate-covered coconut flakes.
