About

The Grand 1894 Opera House is iconic for a few reasons. Firstly, it survived the storms of 1900 and 1915, Hurricane Carla, and Hurricane Alicia. Additionally, the Opera House has survived through periods of neglect. Secondly, this building is one of the last remaining theatres of its era in the state of Texas! It is even listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Lastly, in 1993, this Opera House was proclaimed the "Official Opera House of Texas."

Between the years of 1974-1990, $8 million was raised for the restoration of the building. The restoration was a large community effort, with thousands of local volunteers. As you can see, the Opera House holds a ton of history. It is near and dear to local hearts.
