Central Oregon

Striking mountain peaks and expansive ponderosa pine forests define Central Oregon's high-desert terrain, making for diverse outdoor recreation. For instance, enjoy hiking through ancient volcanic craters, skiing down Mount Bachelor, or float the famous Deschutes River. No matter your skill level or interests, Central Oregon provides accessible activities for all to enjoy.

The diverse landscape of Central Oregon encompasses sagebrush covered plains to towering pines and soaring mountain peaks. This offers visitors opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors year-round. With miles of hiking, golf, and world-class climbing, visitors to Central Oregon also have a chance to ski a dormant volcano at Mt. Bachelor or visit Crater Lake National Park, the deepest lake in the country. In addition, Central Oregon is home to two International Dark Sky destinations, making the vast night skies another draw to this carefully preserved area.

Before fur trappers, early settlers, and the timber industry made their way into Central Oregon starting in the 1820s, the Warm Springs, Wascoe, and Paiute called this region their tribal homeland. Many of these traditions can be appreciated today at the Museum of Warm Springs on the Warm Spring Reservation north of Bend.

When the railroad arrived in 1911, towns like Bend became bustling hubs. The next growth spurt occurred when two rival railroad companies built massive mills on the riverbanks. These businesses drove rapid growth and laid the foundation for the local economy.

Today, Central Oregon honors its rugged roots while focusing on tourism and outdoor preservation. A key aspect when visiting Central Oregon is to keep in mind their “Leave No Trace” principles to ensure the region’s everlasting beauty.
