Welcome to

Bodega Bay

If your idea of a perfect getaway features the sound of crashing waves, the scent of salt air, and a bowl of Dungeness crab chowder on a harbor deck, Bodega Bay is your place. This rugged fishing village on the Sonoma Coast is one of the most dramatic stretches of the Northern California coastline and one of the closest seaside stops north of San Francisco.

Bodega Bay sits where rocky headlands meet the vast Pacific, creating windswept bluffs, sheltered beaches, and a working harbor. The town gained lasting fame as the filming location for Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 thriller The Birds, but its real draw is the raw, unspoiled beauty.

Hike the cliff-edge trails at Bodega Head to watch gray whales migrate offshore. Spend a morning beachcombing at Doran Beach. Eat a crab sandwich at Spud Point Crab Company, then drive to Shell Beach for tide pooling or Salmon Creek for surfing. End the day soaking in a hot tub as the fog rolls across the bluffs.

The drive from San Francisco takes about 1.5 hours via US-101 to Highway 1, making Bodega Bay an easy weekend escape. From Oakland, it's roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes. No matter which direction you come from, the scenic route through Marin County, with optional stops at Stinson Beach and Point Reyes, makes the drive part of the experience.

Aside from its alluring beauty, guests to Bodega Bay enjoy the chance to unplug. Here, cell service is spotty, there's no nightlife, and the tides and the fog set the rhythm of the day. In short, nature runs the show, making the best thing on your to-do list is watching the sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each season offers a distinct experience in Bodega Bay.

  • Fall: These months feature the best weather, with warm, clear days, less fog, and fewer crowds.
  • Winter: This time of year is prime whale and storm watching season. It also offers the quietest atmosphere and lowest rates.
  • Spring: The area showcases blooming wildflowers, harbor seal pups, and the Bodega Bay Fisherman's Festival in early May.
  • Summer: Summertime is peak tourist season, but coastal fog is common. Highs typically are in the 60s, which is much cooler than inland wine country.

Plan on the 65-mile drive taking about 1.5 hours via US-101 North to Highway 1. Arriving from Oakland is roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes, while Sacramento takes 2 hours and 10 minutes. Keep in mind that weekend traffic through Marin County, especially Friday afternoons, can add 30–60 minutes. The scenic route with stops at Stinson Beach, Point Reyes, or Tomales Bay makes the drive part of the trip.

Yes, absolutely! There's no public transit, and rideshare services are extremely unreliable. All restaurants, beaches, trailheads, and attractions are accessible only by driving. As a tip, download offline maps before you arrive, since cell service is spotty along the coast.

It depends on what you're looking for. Doran Beach is the family favorite — sheltered, sandy, with calmer water than the open coast. Bodega Head is best for ocean views and whale watching. Salmon Creek Beach is the local surf spot. Shell Beach offers excellent tide pooling. Swimming is generally not recommended at open-coast beaches due to cold water, strong currents, and sneaker waves.

Layers are essential, even in summer; highs are typically in the 60s with morning fog. Bring a warm jacket or fleece, closed-toe shoes for trail hiking, and a windbreaker for the headlands. Bring binoculars for whale and bird watching.

Several of our Bodega Bay homes welcome dogs. The coast is a great destination for pets: Doran Beach offers a long stretch of sand for running, and the Bodega Head trails provide miles of coastal paths to explore together. Contact our team at 707-582-2483, and we'll send the best pet-friendly options for your dates.

Some of our rental homes include private hot tubs. We know that after a day hiking or kayaking the harbor, a hot tub on the Sonoma Coast is one of the best ways to end the evening, especially when the fog rolls in. Hot tub properties are among our most popular, so we recommend booking early!

Most of our Bodega Bay properties feature fireplaces, which are essential on the Sonoma Coast, where summer highs stay in the 60s and winter storms bring dramatic waves and wind. Guests consistently tell us that lighting the fireplace after a day on the coast is one of the highlights of their stay.

Bodega Head is one of California's premier shore-based whale watching locations. You can often spot spouts right from the cliff trails without needing a boat. Gray whales migrate from December through May, with peak viewing from January through April. Humpback whales are visible from May through November.

The main locations are in the small inland town of Bodega, about 5 miles east: the Potter Schoolhouse (1873) and Saint Teresa of Avila Church. In Bodega Bay itself, the Tides Wharf was a key filming location and is still operating today. The Sonoma Coast Visitors Center offers a guidebook for a self-guided tour of all the filming sites.

Yes. Sonoma Coast Vineyards has a tasting room right in Bodega Bay, the only winery in town, specializing in cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Fort Ross Vineyard in Jenner (about 30 minutes north) offers estate tastings with ocean views. Dutton-Goldfield and Freeman in Sebastopol (about 25 minutes east) are acclaimed cool-climate specialists. Gourmet Au Bay, a waterfront wine bar in town, offers curated flights of boutique Sonoma County wines if you prefer to stay local.

Only Diekmann's Bay Store for basics and sandwiches. The nearest full grocery stores are in Sebastopol (about 30 minutes) or Santa Rosa (about 45 minutes). We strongly recommend stocking up before arriving, especially if you plan to cook in your rental.
