The park transformed a downtown area dominated by railroads and industry into a thriving community space. Spanning 19 acres, it honors the city's past while providing a modern destination for relaxation, recreation, and connection.

Railroad Park opened in 2010 and salvaged bricks and rail tracks from the area to use in the landscape design. Such innovation connects the city's past with its evolving future. 

Its downtown location near the University of Alabama at Birmingham makes it easy to plan a fun-filled itinerary. For instance, next door is Regions Field, home to the Birmingham Barons Baseball Club. Only a few blocks away is the McWane Science Center. With so much to see and do near Railroad Park, the combinations are endless!

Aside from being a springboard to other adventures, it offers wide-open lawns and tree-lined paths. Thirty percent of the area features ponds, streams, and wetlands that provide picturesque views and a haven for wildlife. They'll also appeal to nature lovers or those seeking relaxation.

Railroad Park: Fun Facts & Cool Features 

If you're traveling with children, then you'll enjoy the two age-appropriate play areas. Both feature modern playground equipment and a climbing dome for toddlers and children to explore. Toss in the trains that pass nearby, and it's a thrilling experience for all.

For those seeking to get in shape, check out the outdoor gym. Inspired by equipment found at Muscle Beach in California, it offers free fitness in the middle of Birmingham. Additionally, the various trails accommodate runners, walkers, and casual meanderers. 

The Rain Curtain is an 80-foot-long water feature that oxygenates the lake. While impressive in daylight, it is mesmerizing at night when the backlit LED lights convert water into dazzling colors. 

Gardeners and nature lovers will appreciate that over 600 trees are on site. These range from hardwoods and evergreens to flowering trees. Annual, biennial, and perennial flowers punctuate the luxurious landscaping. The blooms add beauty to the park and provide an escape from the concrete and asphalt of the urban area.

When it's time to eat, have a picnic at Railroad Park! While grilling isn't permitted, you can grab something from The Boxcar cafe near Regions Park or bring carry-out from places like Helen and Eagle's Restaurant. You can't bring alcohol, but The Boxcar serves beer, wine, and cocktails, and is the only licensed ABC vendor at the park.

Like a train depot, Railroad Park serves as a community centerpiece, where history, culture, leisure, and nature connect. For these reasons, adding it to your Iron City itinerary will enhance your getaway.

Here are step-by-step driving directions from downtown Birmingham to Railroad Park:

• Head south on 20th Street North.
• Continue for approximately half a mile.
• Turn right onto 1st Avenue South.
• Drive for 0.3 miles until you reach 14th Street South.
• Turn left onto 14th Street South.
• The entrance twill be on your right-hand side.

• Metered parking is available within a 3 to 4-block radius of the Park.
• Parking in front of 1st Avenue restaurants without dining can result in a ticket.
