Established in 1885, the team eventually became a minor league club (affiliated with the White Sox) and is part of the Southern League. Throughout the years, the Barons have been key to launching the careers of future Major League Baseball stars.
Originally known as the Coal Barons, the ball club has deep roots in the city’s cultural and sporting history. Its home for much of the 20th century was Rickwood Field, but it moved to Regions Field in 2013.
Of note is that Rickwood Field is one of the oldest baseball parks in America and is undergoing renovations. The Barons play an annual game at Rickwood, and plans for some MLB games are in the works.
State-of-the-art Region Fields is positioned perfectly for planning a fun-filled day downtown. The Railroad Park is next door with two playgrounds, a lake, trails, and green space. It’s the perfect family-friendly spot before or after nine innings.

Birmingham Barons Baseball Club: Fun Facts & Cool Features
A cool fact is that the players who went on to success in The Bigs. These include Satchel Paige, Willie Mays, and Rollie Fingers, to name a few.
It’s important to add that many of these stars launched their careers with the Black Barons, part of the Negro League. Established in 1920, this league championed black athletes segregated from playing on white teams. For over 40 years, the Black Barons produced top notch players, won championships, and were touted as “the jewel of Southern black baseball.”
Moving to contemporary stars, Michael Jordan celebrated a stint with the Barons in 1994. The NBA phenom helped shatter the club's single-season attendance record (467,867) while his batting was anything but record-breaking. Jordan batted .202 with three home runs, 51 RBIs, and 30 stolen bases. After one year with the Birmingham Barons, he returned to the NBA Bulls.
