Bethany Beach

The picturesque boardwalk in Bethany Beach is an indisputable focal point of this quaint coastal town’s charm. Though the boardwalk extends less than half-a-mile, the inviting shops, boutiques, and cafes lining it readily draw visitors into the heart of the town’s center and vibrant energy.

Renowned for its pristine family-friendly beaches, Bethany Beach is located in a prime spot on the Atlantic Ocean in Sussex County. With the bustling urban areas of Washington, D.C., Baltimore, or Philadelphia just a short drive away, Bethany Beach is an inviting destination for relaxed beach vibes. Featuring wide sandy beaches frequently blended with shells and soft stones, this coastal landscape provides an ideal setting for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

From the ancestral heritage of the Nanticoke and Lenape peoples, to its establishment in 1901 as a seaside retreat by members of the Disciples of Christ, Bethany Beach has been a destination for rest and reflection for centuries. Early seaside visitors initially could only reach Bethany Beach by railway, gaining it fame as a “Quiet Resort.”

Today, families and couples visit Bethany Beach to escape larger resort towns along the Atlantic Coast. The area maintains a quiet charm, offering spacious beaches that are ripe for sandcastle making and family time, as well as summer bandstand concerts and festivals that highlight the town’s welcoming atmosphere. Consistent beach breaks, along with sandbars, also makes Bethany Beach a popular fall and winter surf spot.

The local culture in Bethany Beach focuses on relaxed coastal living and fresh dining. Seafood lovers enjoy daily catches of blue crab, oysters, and rockfish at waterfront eateries. Don’t forget to enjoy a classic Delaware beach fry for your fries fix, or a scoop of artisanal ice cream along Bethany Beach’s boardwalk.
