About

If you combine a 1974 hole-in-the-wall burger joint, a flowering tree, and a mother’s passion for cooking, you end up with Elvi's Kitchen.

The woman behind this iconic San Pedro eatery is Mrs. Elvia Staines, known locally as Doña Elvia. Applying her love for cooking and serving food, she opened a takeout window beneath her house, Elvi's Burger Isle. With her husband's help, she served burgers, fries, and frescos.

With her forward-thinking mindset, Elvia added Belizean rice and beans to the menu, then more local dishes. Outgrowing the smaller venue, she built two palapas under a towering flamboyant tree beside her home.

As her restaurant grew, Elvia designed the dining room around the tree at its center, whose canopy spread through the thatched roof.

When Hurricane Keith hit in 2000, the storm claimed the tree. While the loss was saddening, the restaurant kept the weathered trunk, which is visible to this day.

Aside from being resilient, Elvi’s Kitchen has earned international recognition. In November 1996, Elvia traveled to Madrid to receive the International Gold Star Award for Quality and Excellence. The Belize Tourism Board named Elvi's Kitchen Restaurant of the Year in 2022. Additionally, the Mundo Maya Organization recognized it as the only Belize restaurant serving a Mayan buffet.

Sadly, Elvia passed away in 2025, but her daughter, Jennie Pinelo, continues the family tradition.

Elvi's Kitchen continues to dazzle diners, proving it lives up to its tag line: "Where Something Good is Always Cooking."

Vibe

The exterior’s earth-toned hues with touches of tropical colors give it instant curb appeal. The simple sign over the entrance beckons diners to enter what will feel more like a home than a business.

The interior features warm wood tones, Belizean accents, and the famous tree whose trunk anchors the room. The sand floor adds a barefoot, beachy touch, while soft lighting and handcrafted details add a personal touch.

The dining areas offer flexibility, like the bar and lounge for a cocktail while you wait, plus an air-conditioned section for guests who want to cool off. The open, sand-floor room delivers an al fresco feel under the thatched roof, with the historic tree as the centerpiece.

This easygoing, genuine ambiance makes Elvi's Kitchen a natural fit for any Belize vacation.

Elvi's Kitchen: Menu & Drinks

With lunch, dinner, and seasonal Mayan Buffet, this eatery shines with versatility, fresh ingredients, and creative cuisine. While cliché, the offerings will truly satisfy the pickiest eater in your group.

Grab a soul-satisfying starter like the street corn, grilled and topped with chipotle key lime butter, queso fresca, and cilantro.

Elvi's Salad will appeal to vegetarians and those seeking a lighter meal. The salad comes with iceberg lettuce, mixed greens, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, black olives, and cheddar cheese. The balsamic-reduction citrus vinaigrette ties the flavors and textures together.

Entrées like Elvi’s Mayan showcase Maya flavors and cooking techniques. With your choice of fresh fish or chicken, the meat is seasoned with Mayan spices, onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers and steamed in a banana leaf. The smoky aroma and juicy protein complement the side of vegetables, making for a feast fitting for Mayan royalty!

The Butter Poached Grouper is silky and rich thanks to the butter poach. It's served on a layer of corn sauce with roasted corn and habanero sauce, and comes with coconut rice.

An entrée showcasing the eatery's creative culinary skills is Chef Jeannie’s Signature Curry. This dish perfectly balances sweetness with some heat. Yellow coconut curry is filled with bell peppers, tomatoes, plantains, onions, and raisins. With your choice of chicken or seafood, your taste buds will dance with delight!

The drinks keep pace with the food, with impressive wine choices and craft cocktails. The Cessna 182T is a refreshing libation with aged Belizean rum, Aperol, cinnamon, and fresh pineapple and lime juice.
