About

When your Pine Tree State vacation needs upscale, award-winning, Cuban-inspired cuisine, look no further than Havana!

Founded by Michael Boland and Deirdre Swords in 1997, every dish is crafted with care, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Not only will your meal taste amazing, but because Havana sources ingredients from local fishermen and farmers, every bite benefits the community.

Over the years, Havana has earned a reputation for excellence, including receiving the Wine Spectator Award for Excellence every year since 2004.

In 2003, Havana expanded its offerings with the Parrilla Tapas Bar and Grill, an outdoor space offering a low-key setting.

Havana’s charm even caught the attention of President Barack Obama. While vacationing in Bar Harbor in 2010, the President dined at the quaint restaurant with his family. Boland said, “They were very easy to connect with. They were really genuine.”

In 2023, Michael was named Restaurateur of the Year by HospitalityMaine. Aside from his guiding hand at Havana, he is also the visionary behind Islesford Dock Restaurant & Gallery, The Chart Room, and Brasserie Le Brun, a French restaurant in Bar Harbor. While Michael credits his wife, Deirdre Swords, with the success of Havana, she is no longer involved. Instead, she is pouring her passion into Artemis Gallery, her art showroom in Northeast Harbor.

With its rich history, dedication to quality, and welcoming atmosphere, Havana is a culinary hotspot.

Vibe

While it is an upscale dining establishment, it does so with charm, grace, and minimalism. Case in point: its facade is a classic New England-style architecture with weathered wood siding, green trim, and window boxes with flowers. The building resembles a home and not a top-tier restaurant.

The decor combines exposed wooden beams with modern accents and white linen-covered tables. The soft lighting and layout create an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere. The vibe is ideal for a romantic dinner or catching up with friends.

While the main dining area is the top draw, the Parrilla Tapas Bar extends into the outdoors for al fresco dining. Additionally, the long bar offers an even more laidback setting.

Havana is where casual vacation attire and “dressing to impress” go hand in hand.

Havana: Menu & Drinks

One dish that diners can’t stop talking about, and that President Obama enjoyed, is the seafood paella. Fresh lobster, shrimp, scallops, smoked chicken, and chorizo simmer in a saffron-infused rice. The best part is the “socarrat,” the crunchy bottom of the pan-fried dish.

Another standout is the lobster thermidor, which is what First Lady Michelle Obama savored. This classic French dish features lobster meat cooked in a rich, creamy sauce and then returned to its shell. Lastly, the lobster is browned under a broiler with a cheese crust, adding flavor and presentation to this classic.

The carne showcases a coffee-rubbed 7-oz filet mignon with charred scallion bearnaise sauce, Yukon fondant, spiced heirloom carrots, and broccolini. The flavors and textures will have your taste buds dancing!

For a lighter bite, the Parrilla Tapas Bar offers a variety of grilled dishes for a tapas dining experience. Small plates range from grilled Caesar salad, tuna ceviche, oysters, and deviled eggs. Large plate options include a mixed grill with various seafood and steaks, as well as house specials like the Pollo a la Parilla. This Latin-inspired dish has grilled chicken in a soy-lemongrass BBQ sauce. Add the coconut java rice and atchara, and you have a shareable feast!

Havana’s drink menu is just as impressive. The mojito, made with fresh mint and lime, is refreshing and pairs with the bold flavors of the food. Of course, the award-winning wine list offers plenty of options, while the spirits selection is equally impressive. Add the cigars, and you have a restaurant where you’re encouraged to linger long after your last bite.

As you can see, dining at Havana is an experience! From its warm atmosphere, VIP history, and unforgettable flavors, dining here will enhance your Bar Harbor getaway!
