The Gardens started as a heartfelt gift from one of Florida’s pioneering women—Marie Selby. In 1971, Marie Selby donated her seven-acre bayfront estate to become a public garden after she passed away. She hoped the community would enjoy the beauty she loved. The gardens opened in 1975 and have since become known worldwide for research and conservation.
Today, the gardens are known for their collection of epiphytes—air plants and orchids that grow on other plants. Scientists study and protect these species, while visitors can simply enjoy the scenery. There are two campuses to explore: Downtown Sarasota and Historic Spanish Point in nearby Osprey.
