About

Some restaurants take themselves seriously. The Ugly Grouper took the opposite approach and built a beloved island dining spot around a fish that nobody would call handsome. Grouper is a Florida seafood staple, but with its big, rough, less-than-photogenic look, it isn't winning any beauty contests. The founders leaned into that joke, and the result is one of the most recognizable dining spots on Anna Maria Island.

The concept was simple: build a fun, outdoor place where folks could relax, eat fresh local seafood, listen to live music, and soak up the island lifestyle, all with a bit of quirky humor mixed in. The restaurant took over the property once home to the Barefoot Tiki Bar and Cafe, a spot acquired back in March 2002, and gave it new life.

The centerpiece is impossible to miss: a massive metal grouper sculpture weighing in at 3,180 pounds and stretching 20 feet long, 14 feet tall, and 10 feet wide. Tampa artist Dominique Martinez of Rustic Steel Creations built the beast from scrap car parts, Harley-Davidson motorcycle components, and other found objects. When visiting, see if you can spot motorcycle rotors, license plates, chrome bumpers, and a muffin tray.

While the statue is fun for photo ops, the restaurant earned its reputation with outdoor dining, live entertainment, a family-friendly setting, and a kids' play area with games. Such amenities become appealing after a day at Anna Maria Island Beach or on the water with CoastLine Dolphin & Snorkeling Excursions. The Ugly Grouper lets you enjoy tasty food and space for everyone to relax and unwind.

Find out for yourself with a visit, where its huge outdoor patio, steady lineup of live music, and island-casual attitude are proof that embracing a little ugliness is rewarding!

Vibe

The mood is set when you spy the iconic steel grouper sculpture! Tropical touches, easygoing signage, and the outdoor patio add to the magic.

The covered patio and bar area feature wooden accents, open concept, nautical themes, and playful decor.

Additionally, live music pumps from a dedicated tin shanty, and the energy stays upbeat and family-friendly throughout the area. While the vibe is lively, it's never chaotic, but it's always perfect for kicking back.

The dining areas range from the covered outdoor patio to bar seating for solo diners and couples. Kids have their own play area and games nearby, so parents can relax knowing they're entertained throughout the meal.

Whether you're traveling with children or on a couples getaway, The Ugly Grouper is a natural fit on your Anna Maria Island vacation.

The Ugly Grouper: Menu & Drinks

With "grouper" in its name, you can bet there are plenty of options to choose from! The Grouper Sandwich is a winner, served on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, and house-made Cajun remoulade.

The Grouper Polynesian Boat is another must-try. The fish is blackened and served with garlic parmesan risotto and seasonal vegetables inside a hollowed pineapple boat. The presentation is fun and delicious!

Naturally, there's more to be had than grouper. The Coconut Shrimp is a prime example, with fresh, large butterflied shrimp fried crispy in a coconut batter. It comes with a sweet piña colada sauce for dipping and is the kind of dish that disappears fast.

Not into seafood? No worries! The Angus Burger is a juicy handheld showcasing a 1/2-pound beef patty on a brioche bun with all the trimmings and your choice of cheese. It comes with fries and coleslaw, making it a hearty choice after swimming at Bean Point Beach.

When you need an ice-cold beverage, try craft cocktails like the A.M.I. Sunset! This frozen specialty is built with Cruzan silver rum plus strawberry and mango puree.

A variety of beers are on tap or in bottles, and the wines pair with any menu item.

When you seek a place with a fun, easy-going vibe, superb seafood and handhelds, and icy libations, The Ugly Grouper is a must-visit.
