About

If you have spent any amount of time at Yellowstone National Park, you know how special it is. Growing up nearby, I have spent time throughout the park at various corners. It wasn’t until a bit more recently that I took the time to visit the Museum of the Yellowstone. It is a museum dedicated to telling the story of the history of the park. It’s remarkable what went into the creation of this park and the people who are behind it, including those who lost their lives here.

The Museum of the Yellowstone tells the story of the park itself as well as how much it has influenced West Yellowstone and the whole region really. The park is managed by the Yellowstone Historic Center, which is a local nonprofit, and it is not tourism-driven.

There are numerous exhibits throughout the museum that are quite moving. One of the most notable is the HO! For Yellowstone exhibit. This is a walk-through of the history of the area’s transportation from the early days of stagecoaches to the growth of the railroads and, ultimately, the highway system.

Another really cool exhibit is the Development of the Historic District. It provides insight into the growth of the West Yellowstone Oregon Shortline Terminus Historic District. You can sit down and watch a few films here, too, including Yellowstone Aflame, which tells of the fires in 1988 and how the region was reborn. Earthquake of 1959 is another short film that talks about the tragedy that happened in this area.

Fun Facts

The museum provides insight into the foundation of this community, including how West Yellowstone was founded in 1908 as the railroad entered the area. It then showcases the growth of the area, including how the Union Pacific Railroad created such an impact on the region.

One of the great things here is that the museum also tells of the history of some of the individual buildings that exist, as well as showcasing the history and timeline of the area through stories of people.

I would plan to spend a couple of hours touring the museum and getting to see all of the movies.

Getting to the Museum of the Yellowstone is easy enough to do. It is located on Yellowstone Avenue, near the corner of N. Canyon ST. It’s close to Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center and just Off Route 191.
