The International Rose Test Garden has a rich history dates back to the early 20th century. The brainchild of Jesse Currey, an editor at the Oregon Journal and an avid rose enthusiast, the garden was established in 1915. 

Its genesis was to serve as a sanctuary for hybrid European roses during World War I. This initiative ensured that these exquisite varieties survived the devastations of war, and they began arriving in Portland in 1918.

By June 1924, the garden was officially dedicated, and Florence, the first rose curator, was appointed. The park symbolized Portland's identity and reputation as a rose-growing center. 

The International Rose Test Garden stands proudly as the oldest continuously operating public rose test garden in the United States. 

Over the years, the International Rose Test Garden has evolved from a testing ground for new rose varieties to one of the top attractions in Portland. Over 700,000 people visit annually!
