About

Calling all history buffs! You can learn more about Whitefish's rich history at a must-visit attraction that will transport you back in time – Stumptown Historical Society

This museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the area's past. It offers an enjoyable experience for history buffs and curious travelers. Noted for its dazzling half-timbered walls and large dormers, the Whitefish depot was restored in the 1990s to house a waiting room, railroad offices, and the Stumptown Historical Society.

Whitefish's roots date back to the late 1800s when the town was not much more than the train depot, whose workers had to clear a path through the heavily forested area to accommodate.

The nickname "Stumptown" reflects the timber-heavy landscape that once dominated the area. The town's history is intertwined with the arrival of the Great Northern Railway and the construction of the historic Whitefish Depot, which serves as the gateway to exploring the town's past.

Neighboring Whitefish's train depot, the Stumptown Historical Society is the guardian of Whitefish's history, preserving and sharing the stories of this charming Montana town.

The society was founded in 1982 and has been dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the history and heritage of Whitefish for four decades.

What sets the Stumptown Historical Society apart is its dedication to active preservation. This commitment extends beyond the museum's walls, with various projects aimed at restoring and maintaining historic buildings, such as the recent painting project that restored the depot to its past glory.
