About

Amidst the picturesque terrain of Montana, the Danny On Trail stands as a testament to nature's beauty and man's spirit of adventure.

The Danny On Trail memorializes forest ecologist Danny On, who died in a skiing accident. It's only fitting that the trail bears his name. Danny, who mentored those interested in photography, skiing, and nature, would be honored that the hike gives back to the community as he did.

Whitefish, a town with an impressive list of outdoor activities, provides the perfect backdrop for this trail into Montana's wild side.

AllTrails ranks this out-and-back hike challenging because it climbs 2,037 and is 8 miles roundtrip. The trail is well-marked, and hikers should plan on the round trip taking about 4.5 hours.

Another option is to take the lift to the top of The Big Mountain and walk the 3.8 miles downhill to Whitefish. Or hike up and take the gondola down. Either way, there are various options for hikers of all levels.

Whichever option you choose, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Flathead Valley, Glacier National Park, and the Canadian Rockies. The summit view is 360 degrees of alpine splendor.

Whether you're an experienced hiker or looking to breathe fresh mountain air, this trail promises experiences that will be forever etched in your memory.

Fun Facts & Cool Features

One of the most intriguing features of the Danny On Trail is the Whispering Falls, a cascading waterfall that's earned its name from the gentle sound it makes, reminiscent of whispered secrets. Many claim that the water's sound is therapeutic and ideal for relaxation.

The Danny On Trail is known for its "Sunset Lookout," where hikers have unobstructed views of the Montana sky. Bring your camera to capture the sunset's vivid orange and salmon colors.

While hiking, watch for wildlife like playful squirrels and timid deer. You'll sometimes feel like you're part of a nature documentary. This is bear country, so pack bear spray and always maintain a safe distance from all wildlife.

Some trail sections can be rocky and slippery, especially after rainfall, so use caution and wear hiking boots.

If you're planning a Whitefish vacation, adding the Danny On Trail to your itinerary will enhance your Montana getaway.

Whether it's the allure of hiking the challenging out-and-back route or riding the lift to the top and back, the Danny On Trail promises to give you a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
