The FAU Harbor Branch Ocean Discovery Visitors Center is part of Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce, Florida. 

This facility is dedicated to educating the public about marine science and the ongoing research conducted at the institute. 

Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute was founded in 1971 and has been part of Florida Atlantic University since 2007. Over the years, it has become a leading research institution in oceanography, marine biomedicine, ocean engineering, and marine science.

The Visitors Center acts as the public's window into the institute's research, showcasing interactive exhibits, aquariums, and a video theater. They even offer immersive tours that take visitors behind the scenes of the working laboratories. 

The exhibits at the Visitors Center feature a wide range of topics, from marine biodiversity to the technology used for ocean exploration.

Another fascinating feature is the Immersion Tour, which takes visitors behind the scenes of the working laboratories and aquaculture facilities. This tour gives a unique insight into the daily work of researchers and scientists at the institute.

The Visitors Center is also home to a 6,000-gallon aquarium with a stunning array of marine life from the Indian River Lagoon. Several smaller aquariums showcase various marine species from around the world.

Local Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as much walking is involved, especially if you take the Immersion Tour.
  • The Immersion Tours are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so plan your visit accordingly if you want to participate in this experience.
  • Don't forget your camera! There are plenty of photo opportunities throughout the Visitors Center.
  • The Ocean Science Lecture Series is usually held on Wednesdays at 4 PM, so plan your visit accordingly if you are interested in attending a lecture.
