About

When your Tampa vacation requires shimmering white sands and tepid, shallow waters, head west to Clearwater Beach! This natural wonder has been drawing vacationers from all walks of life for decades.

But long before sunbathers slathered themselves with sunscreen, the Tocobaga people called this coastal area home. For hundreds of years, these indigenous people lived off the land and the sea. By the 16th century, Spanish explorers landed on these shores, but it took a few more generations before permanent settlements popped up.

In the 1840s, the U.S. government started offering land grants to encourage new families to move south. Back then, the area was called Clear Water Harbor due to its fresh springs and inviting shoreline. Early homesteaders like James Stevens and Samuel Stevenson built the first houses, paving the way for what would become a thriving town.

The arrival of the railroad in 1888 opened the area to new opportunities, and in 1891, it officially became Clearwater.

The beach became a vacation destination thanks to developer Morton F. Plant. In 1916, he funded the first bridge to the island, making the beach accessible to everyone. He also built the grand Belleview Inn, which became a magnet for travelers.

A land boom in the 1920s gave the town another boost, moving it toward what it is today: a mix of old-fashioned charm and modern amenities.

Now that you have a better understanding of how Clearwater Beach became a national treasure, let’s explore why it’s one of Florida’s most beloved beaches.

Clearwater Beach: Fun Facts & Cool Features

Of course, the most fantastic feature is its sandy beach. The brilliant white sand feels soft as powder and stays cool beneath your feet, even on blistering hot summer days. This phenomenon is possible because the sand is 99% quartz, which reflects sunlight instead of absorbing it.

After a day in the sun, the Sunsets at Pier 60 festival will appeal to young and old alike. Every evening, weather permitting, Pier 60 comes alive with family-friendly entertainment. This yearly event starts two hours before sunset and concludes two hours afterwards, featuring playgrounds, street shows, music, and beachside crafters. And the best part is that it’s free!

The clear ocean is home to plenty of bottlenose dolphins, and spotting them is a regular event. For an up-close experience, book a tour to visit these playful mammals. Sightings are so frequent that most tours even guarantee them, like Little Toot Dolphin Adventure and Fins Up Clearwater, to name a few.

Restaurants abound, with must-visits like Soul Mediterranean Cuisine and Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill.

Additionally, there are plenty of trails for hiking and biking, while kayak, SUP, and surf shops have all the gear you’ll need to hit the water. Shoppers will have the time of their life at Pelican Walk Plaza, where boutiques and casual bars wait to be discovered. The shops also offer a break from the sun and heat.

The beach’s proximity to area landmarks and attractions makes planning an itinerary fun and easy. For instance, a short drive south of the island is Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve and Sand Key Park. Further south and inland is the Florida Botanical Gardens, home to 90 acres of Floridian plants.

Whether you’re building sandcastles, catching live performances, or watching playful dolphins, it’s easy to see why Clearwater Beach ranks high for Florida getaways.
