Splitrock Pools

About

When the weather turns bad, most people don’t think much about getting in the water, but it may be the perfect time to do so. Split Rock Pools in Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia, is an outdoor pool that’s heated to just the right temperature to make it thoroughly warming and inviting. What we found when visiting was that Split Rock Pools is the better option over just enjoying some time in a hot tub. It is far more like a fun adventure instead. It’s perfectly suited for both adults and children, with both indoor and outdoor heated swimming areas.

In addition to the indoor and outdoor heated pools, it also offers a water slide and a hot tub. Relaxing in the hot tub with the views of the mountains around you is an incredible experience that I highly recommend. After time skiing, sitting here is also quite relaxing and a good way to reduce muscle fatigue.

The indoor pool is a lot of fun and perfect for kids who want to get wet and keep splashing in the water for hours. There are areas that are just for the kids but also lots of ways for parents and kids to play in the water together. The big red slide is huge and allows parents to take their kids down on it together (which can be a lot of fun because it allows smaller kids to have some fun with the water slide that is likely otherwise too big). There’s a hot tub inside the clubhouse area. It’s not too big but enough to share with several people. There are areas for chairs and a few tables in the indoor space, which is great for those who want to relax outside of the water.

In the middle of winter, there is something very refreshing about stepping into the warm water, often with steam coming up from it. There’s a small slide that’s perfect for a bit of fun without creating a huge dunk in the pool. It’s even possible to swim while it is snowing, depending on if the location is open.

Overall, Split Rock Pools is not a large space, but one that has a lot of fun to offer. There are professionals available to help make sure there’s plenty of oversight. It has some nice features, too, like cute bridges and walkways throughout the area. The entire place is designed to be easy to use, but there are steps in various areas. The floors can also be pretty slick.

One of the best treats is to sit by the windows inside and check out the beautiful hills and valleys outdoors. The view from this area is fun, too.

Location & Environment

Split Rock Pools is easy to get to as it is just off Snowshoe Drive, right in the heart of the area. It is only a few minutes from Snowshoe Mountain Lodge and the Allegheny Springs. For those coming to this area, it is super easy to get to.

As for the environment, Split Rock Pools is very unassuming. It’s tucked into an area a bit off the road. Once there, there’s an entrance that takes you to a desk where you can then purchase your pass and get started. There’s an indoor pool that’s just a few steps away from this, and outside, you will find the bigger outdoor pool.

Outside, there’s a large patio area with plenty of room to spread out. There are chairs to relax in while you watch your family play in the water. The area has a nice layout with some rock features throughout. There’s also a fun water fountain in the middle. The side outdoors is smaller, and that makes it a bit easier to slide into the water without a lot of splashing.

The entire area is very welcoming, clean, and well maintained. It is easy to have some fun here and feel relaxed throughout the experience.

Seasonal Availability & Popularity

Split Rock Pools is available throughout the year, both summer and winter. Keep in mind that a snowstorm is likely to shut things down, but even when there are several inches of snow on the ground, the outdoor and indoor pools are open and welcoming.

Cost & Rules

The cost for Split Rock Pools depends on the time of year and features. Most often, there is a Fun Pass that was $15 for the whole day when we visited. Some of the hotels in the area offer free access to Split Rock Pools (be sure to ask when comparing the options available to you here.)

Be sure to check out what’s available. Give them a call before you visit since there are capacity limits (both during the winter and the summer months). You also want to be sure you book your trip in advance, if possible.
