While all the 30A communities boast of their sugar-white sand, only Grayton Beach State Park has earned the honor of being named one of the "best beaches in America."
As a state park, this pristine natural wonder is home to a vast beach, emerald water, and nearly 2,000 acres of protected coastal wilderness.
Shaped by wind and water, the shifting dunes offer a look at a coastal ecosystem that has thrived for centuries.
As 30A began getting populated with vacation homes and tourists, the state acquired it as a state park in 1967. This act secured the land from overdevelopment, enabling rangers to protect the coastal dune lakes, the maritime forest, and the nesting habitat for protected animals.
The park features over 2,000 acres, offering a wide variety of ecosystems. The Gulf shoreline is a mile of sun-kissed sands, while the pine flatwoods and scrub oak forest showcase salt wind-sculpted trees.
Western Lake is a coastal dune lake at the edge of the park, adding another dimension to a visit. Dune lakes are rare and are only found in four countries worldwide. In the United States, only Florida and Oregon have such lakes, with three residing in Grayton Beach.
The park provides critical habitat for nesting sea turtles, while the interior forests support barred owls, wading birds, and countless other species.
The park does reach capacity during the summer, so rangers close during high visitation. Once capacity lessens, the park is quickly reopened, so be patient!
Whether you're coming for the afternoon or staying at the cabins or campgrounds, Grayton Beach State Park delivers a wild and welcoming experience!
Grayton Beach State Park: Fun Facts & Cool Features
As mentioned, this landmark is home to a geological phenomenon: coastal dune lakes. Western Lake is a prime example, with freshwater between the dunes that periodically connect to the Gulf with the tides and rainfall.
Aside from being a unique work of nature, the calm waters are perfect for paddleboarding and kayaking. Paddlers can launch directly onto Western Lake and explore its 100-acre surface, offering a different perspective on the landscape than viewing from the beach.
The trails here are worth every step. Four miles of hiking paths wind through a coastal forest of wind-swept scrub oaks and magnolias. The canopy shifts and opens as the trail moves from shaded forest to dune ridgelines with expansive Gulf views.
The top attraction is, of course, the renowned beach. The quartz-white shoreline stretches for about a mile, with the turquoise water looking more like the Caribbean than Florida. Aside from attracting beachcombers, the beach is home to nesting loggerhead sea turtles and shorebirds. It's for these creatures that the shoreline is protected, to ensure the top-rated beach can be enjoyed by generations to come.
For those who want more than a day trip, the cabins and campgrounds are a great option. The cabins resemble a one-story home more than they do a rustic cabin, sleeping up to six with heating, plumbing, a small kitchen, and air conditioning. The campgrounds provide a more rustic option and include campfire circles. Both are extremely popular and are often booked months in advance, so plan accordingly!
As you can tell, Grayton Beach State Park is one of the most compelling stops on a 30A vacation. It's accessible via the Timpoochee Trail, close to the famed Grayton restaurants, The Red Bar in Grayton, and Black Bear Bread Co. Include a visit on your Santa Rosa Beach vacation!
