About

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in the heart of Santa Fe’s historic downtown celebrates the art, life, and independent spirit of one of America’s most influential modern artists of the 20th century. Launched in 1997, the museum itself promotes two ways to experience the colorful and independent spirit of Georgia O’Keeffe’s life and work in New Mexico. Of note, the “New O’Keeffe”, an even larger campus for the innovative museum, is set to open in downtown Santa Fe in 2028.

In addition to the central Georgia O’Keeffe Museum campus in Santa Fe, visitors can tour the O’Keeffe Home & Studio located in the village of Abiquiu approximately 60 miles north. At the location in Santa Fe, thoughtfully curated galleries provide museum-goers a clear sense of how O’Keeffe saw the world and how she turned everyday subjects into bold, unforgettable forms. Advance tickets are recommended and are only available 60 days in advance.

For further appreciation of elements captured in O’Keeffe’s timeless paintings, plan a day trip north for The Abiquiu Home & Studio Tour. For an even deeper dive into the mountains, bones, and sands forever captured in O’Keeffe’s paintings, add in a visit to the Ghost Ranch Conference and Education Center located another 20 minutes up Highway 84. Hike the red-colored trails and capture the summit of Pedernal in the distance.

Beyond the artwork, the museum experience is designed to connect you with O’Keeffe’s larger story, including her deep ties to New Mexico and the landscapes that shaped her work.

Georgia O'Keeffe Museum: Fun Facts & Cool Features

Born in Wisconsin in 1887, O’Keeffe studied at the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the Art Students League in New York before carving her way into the abstract art world that eventually led her to New Mexico. Following a first summer visit to northern New Mexico in 1929, O’Keeffe returned to this enchanting landscape time and again, and made New Mexico her permanent home in 1949.

Today, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum showcases O’Keeffe works across mediums, so you’re not just seeing paintings. You may also encounter drawings and sculpture depending on what’s on view.

Be sure to check the exhibition calendar, since the museum hosts rotating exhibitions in addition to its core focus on O’Keeffe. Additionally, the museum connects to deeper resources through its library and archive (available by appointment), which is a big plus for art lovers who enjoy going beyond the gallery labels.

Visiting the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum adds an easy, culture-rich highlight to a Santa Fe vacation, and you’ll leave seeing the Southwest with fresh eyes.
