About
Any trip to Santa Fe inevitably entails a stroll through the plaza, and any authentic trip carves out time to dine at the Plaza Cafe Downtown.
The restaurant opened in 1905, long before “the city different” became a top global travel destination. Set on the west curb of the historic Santa Fe Plaza, this is one of the oldest restaurants in town and a culinary institution for breakfast, lunch, and classic New Mexico comfort food.
In 1947, Greek immigrant Dan (Dionysios) Razatos and his wife Beneranda, a Santa Fe native, took ownership of the cafe. Together, they built a family-run restaurant grounded in hospitality, community, and respect for New Mexican flavors. That foundation still shapes the cafe today, peppered with familiar faces of staff that have been there for up to 20, and even 40 years.
Locals and frequent visitors alike hold onto memories of meals shared in the distinct southwestern diner-style eatery, and for many this is the first and last stop on a Santa Fe getaway. In 2003, Plaza Cafe expanded its reach to a sister southside location, which in 2009 relocated to San Isidro Plaza. Both the iconic Plaza Cafe Downtown, and its offspring Plaza Cafe Southside, continue to be owned by members of the Razatos family.
Vibe
It would be impossible to miss the inviting open-air tables, framed by colorful umbrellas and hanging plants on Lincoln Ave., that populate Plaza Cafe’s outdoor patio. With tables facing the Santa Fe Plaza, in addition to the unforgettable food, this vantage point offers some of the best people-watching downtown. It's an easy place to linger over coffee while the city wakes up around you.
Inside, the space has a classic American diner look with a nostalgic feel that honors the cafe's long history. Vibrant southwestern paintings adorn the walls, offset with warm lighting that spills over tables and booths. An iconic photo from the 1950s shows how little the spirit of the place has changed. A series of bar stools lined up in front of the stainless steel counter on the north side of the cafe further echo the diner’s legacy. The mood is relaxed and welcoming, so families, solo travelers, and longtime locals all fit right in.
Plaza Cafe Downtown: Menu & Drinks
A fundamental element of Plaza Cafe’s dishes is that they are all made daily from scratch. This includes their homemade bread and assortment of cakes and pies. The kitchen further blends traditional New Mexican cuisine, Greek influences from the Razatos family, and American diner favorites.
Using time-honored recipes, there is depth and authenticity in every bite. From their signature blue corn tortillas and blue corn pancakes, to their seasonal specials with a nod to international flavors, each dish is crafted with care. Pair any meal with a cup of coffee, the drink that has started countless mornings here.
The Blue Corn Enchiladas are a must. They're made with housemade blue corn tortillas and taste even better smothered in red or green chile. For something sweet, the Blue Corn Piñon Pancakes feature piñon nuts, a true taste of the Southwest. Lunch fans should try the Green Chile Cheeseburger, a New Mexico staple done the classic way.
A meal at Plaza Cafe Downtown is more than breakfast or lunch. It's a chance to eat where the city has gathered for generations, right on its most famous square. The food is honest, the service is warm, and the history is real. For anyone who wants a taste of authentic Santa Fe, this spot earns a place on the itinerary.
