About

The Atrisco Cafe & Bar, located in the DeVargas Center off Paseo de Peralta, prides itself on being a third-generation family restaurant serving not only the best New Mexican food, but the best margarita in Santa Fe. Situated about 10 blocks from the Santa Fe Plaza, part of Atrisco’s charm is that this is where you can truly find locals who have come to get their chile fix.

The name Atrisco pays homage to the family’s restaurant roots, planted at the corner of Atrisco Boulevard and Central in Albuquerque. From the 1940s to the 1970s, several members of the family worked at Central Cafe in the Atrisco barrio. This included Georgia, mother of Atrisco’s owner and chef George. Georgia owned and operated the highly recognized Tomasita’s in Santa Fe from 1974 - 2000, providing George hands-on experience in every aspect of the restaurant business. In 2009, George opened Atrisco Cafe & Bar and in 2011 he officially took over ownership and management

Atrisco calls itself a friendly, neighborhood New Mexican restaurant, and the philosophy behind it is simple: simple recipes, fresh ingredients, and friendly service. The kitchen caters to locals who know their red and green chile. It also offers a small, carefully crafted list of American dishes for anyone who wants a break from the heat.

The restaurant's ties to local producers set it apart. Lamb comes from New Mexico and Colorado ranchers. Sopaipillas arrive with raw B's Honey. In May 2023, Atrisco partnered with Sunnyside Meats and East Pines Ranch to serve local, pasture-raised beef. The goal is to let quality ingredients carry the flavor, and the result is food that tastes like it belongs here.

Vibe

Atrisco sits inconspicuously at the Main Entrance of DeVargas Center (immediately left of CVS pharmacy), and just a short drive from the historic Plaza. After a day of exploring Bandelier National Monument or the Santuario de Chimayo north of Santa Fe, DeVargas Center is easily accessible just as you drop back into town.

It’s a spot where locals run into old friends, and old friends reunite to reminisce over chile, sopaipillas, and, oh yes, margaritas. Inside, the setting is casual and relaxed. Booths and tables fill the dining room, and the small bar area can draw a crowd.

The overall atmosphere is easygoing and welcoming. It’s a place where staff treat regulars and visitors like family. Weekly specials, happy hours, and southwest hospitality give the place a lively, community feel without any fuss. Kids, families, and groups all fit right in.

Atrisco Cafe & Bar: Menu & Drinks

The culinary philosophy at Atrisco revolves around simple recipes, fresh ingredients, and friendly service. From locally sourced honey, lamb from New Mexican and Colorado ranchers, and red chile from pods grown by the Delgado family in the southern NM village of Salem, the flavors of the southwest are on full display at Atrisco. With dishes catering principally to authentic New Mexican red and green chile, the menu also includes a carefully crafted selection of American favorites.

The Carne Adovada is a must for first-timers. Tender pork simmers in their famous red chile, so you taste the depth of those whole pods in every bite. Guests also rave about the adobada enchiladas, which bring the same rich chile in a different form.

The Red Chile Enchiladas show off the kitchen's focus on simple recipes done well. Order them "Christmas" style if you want both red and green chile and can't decide. Save room for the sopaipillas. These warm, puffy pastries are served with local raw honey, and drizzling it into the hollow center is a New Mexico tradition worth trying. Or, go for the dessert sopaipilla stuffed with vanilla ice cream.

If you’re not in the mood for chile, the meatloaf with mashed potatoes has its own loyal fan base, and the classic burger made with local beef comes with house-made fries.

At the bar, Atrisco boasts the best margarita in Santa Fe. Regulars also point newcomers toward the Swirl frozen margarita, a house favorite that's easy to spot on neighboring tables.

A Santa Fe vacation calls for at least one meal that tastes truly local, and Atrisco delivers. Add in a relaxed setting, room for the whole family, and a standout margarita, and it's an easy pick for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch.
