About
Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary started out as an innovative wastewater treatment project in the late 70s and has since become a well-known example of ecological restoration. It now comprises over 300 acres of freshwater and saltwater marsh, tidal mudflats and grassy uplands which support hundreds of species. It's a place which offers a very real mixture of natural habitat and opportunity for the public to get out and experience it.Right on the edge of Humboldt Bay the sanctuary uses natural processes to treat the city's wastewater prior to it re-entering the bay. The treatment ponds and restored wetlands have become a major wildlife refuge, particularly for birds. It's a key stop off for migrating waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway and you can see egrets, herons, hawks and songbirds all year round. It's a good example of how urban life and nature can co-exist and it's a site that draws in eco-tourists, researchers and families.Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary is also a community gathering place with over 5 miles of walking and biking trails, benches and an interpretive centre full of exhibits. It's a place that welcomes birders, nature lovers and anyone who just wants a peaceful place to get out and explore.
