Japhy's Soup & Noodles

About

Nothing says cozy or comforting more than a warm meal in one of the most popular eateries in Trinidad. So, whenever we feel a slight chill in the air, we head straight to Japhy’s Soup & Noodles, a favorite spot of locals and visitors alike. Located in Arcata, this charming eatery is known for its healthy lunches and dinners filled with homemade soups and Japanese-style noodles.

Since it’s near the university, Japhy’s Soup & Noodles gives off a strong college vibe where you order at a counter and wait patiently for your meal.  You can also call your order in and it will more than likely be ready and waiting for you when you arrive.

About

Japhy’s Soup & Noodles has been around since 1998 and is known for serving simple homemade fare at affordable prices. Everything is made in-house, including the various dressings. They take the time to bake their own cornbread and cookies daily to serve with meals as well.

When possible, organic ingredients are used, as well as those from farmers and producers in the surrounding areas. Various vegetables come from Neukom Family Farm, Willow Creek Farm, Warrant Creek Farm, Earth in Hands Farm, and others nearby. When these are unavailable, they work with a supplier of organic produce located in San Francisco.

As an eco-friendly and environmentally conscious café, they also encourage customers to bring their own takeout containers. If not, they send you home with recycled compostable ones. You’ll definitely want to take something back with you to your vacation rental to have later on or for the next day.

In addition, Japhy’s goes to great lengths to compost and recycle all that it can, always focusing on ways to limit waste.

The restaurant is open weekdays, Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. but closed on holidays and weekends.

Location & Environment

Japhy’s Soup and Noodles restaurant is located at 1563 G Street in Arcata. It is also within walking distance from Humboldt State University (now known as Cal Poly Humboldt). The interior walls showcase the work of local artists, including the art panels and mural in the main dining area. The restroom also has an inspiring mural you’ll want to check out.

What’s On the Menu

The menu here provides plenty of options for enjoying healthy, hearty dishes, complete with the local and organic ingredients mentioned earlier. Also, both vegetarian and vegan options are available, along with daily specials. You can’t go wrong trying out any of these.

Japhy’s Hot Noodle Bowl, either Authentic Japanese Style or Vegetarian style

Build your bowl by selecting which broth, noodle, protein (pork, chicken, or tofu), and vegetables you want. One of my current favorites is the combination of standard shoyu broth, udon noodles, cha shu pork, and various vegetables.

Japhy’s Cold Noodle Salad Plate

Build your plate by choosing noodles, dressing, and a topping (chicken, pork, or tofu).

Homemade Soups

Soups are served by the cup or a bowl with rice or bread. Specials abound and are different each day. Always check the day board to find out what fresh, homemade soups are specials for the day. These often sell out quickly, so get there early.

Salads

Choose a salad, then one of the specialty dressings.

Our Recommendations

While the menu is simple and straightforward, our recommendations, in addition to the examples mentioned above, include the following.

  • Ginger quinoa vegetable soup
  • Hot miso broth noodle bowls with tofu
  • Vegetarian bowl, complete with ramen noodles, tamari-garlic ginger broth, and seared tofu
  • Cold noodle salad with udon noodles topped with Chinese peanut dressing
  • Green chicken curry
  • Green salads with tofu
  • Green salads with a spicy tahini dressing
