What do a gas station, office building, cinema, and theater have in common? Answer: they have all been a part of the Jose Peon Contreras Theater. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the theater located in Merida’s center is an authentic symbol of art and culture in the Yucatan. Note: The historic Jose Peon Contreras theater has been undergoing restoration following damage from a fire in November 2022. However, two of its spectacular galleries have reopened to the public and provide a glimpse into the theater’s grandeur. If your Merida plans include a performance, you’ll be happy to know the symphonic orchestra that usually graces the Jose Peon Contreras stage continues to present at the nearby Museo Palacio de la Música.

Designed by Italian architect Enrico Deserti, the Jose Peon Contreras theater showcases Renaissance and French Neoclassical architectural styles. It harkens back to the elegance of older European theaters and includes a dome with beautiful fresco. 

The theater, inaugurated in 1908, was named after famed Yucatan poet, playwright, doctor, and politician Jose Peon Contreras. The 1,000-seat auditorium features a 14-meter (45-foot) wide stage, equaling any of Mexico's premiere theaters. 

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by intricate frescoes, stunning chandeliers, and lavish drapery that create an ambiance of timeless sophistication. The main hall, with its plush red velvet seating and gilded balconies, provides an immersive experience for theater-goers. 

The theater has hosted countless performances, from operas and ballets to contemporary plays and concerts. Until the fire in November 2022 that led to restoration efforts, the theater was also home to the Yucatan Symphonic Orchestra. Before becoming the iconic theater it is today, it also functioned as a gas station, office building, and cinema.

One of the theater's most striking features is its grand staircase, which has become an iconic photo spot. This sweeping staircase, adorned with classical sculptures and intricate ironwork, exemplifies the elegance and craftsmanship that define the theater's aesthetic.

Another fascinating aspect is the dome painted by Italian Nicolás Alegreti, entitled The Allegory of the Arts and Sciences.
