About

I had the pleasure of exploring Ponderosa State Park during a recent visit to McCall, Idaho. Primarily a day-use park, it also offers overnight stays, which is what I opted for to truly soak in the natural beauty that surrounds the park throughout the year.

Together with a small group, we set up camp for the weekend amid the stunning backdrop of the mountains and the glistening Payette Lake. The park also has cabins, but you'd need to book these well in advance. I've camped here several times, and each visit unveils a new facet of its awe-inspiring landscape.

Despite its popularity, Ponderosa State Park retains its tranquil charm thanks to its vast expanse. I usually bring my bike along and spend my days either biking or hiking in different directions. If you're interested in learning more about the local wildlife, you can even book a guided hike.

The park offers a plethora of activities to keep you engaged. From fishing and biking to wildlife spotting and exploring the marsh, there's something for everyone.

My personal favorite is the hike to Osprey Point. It's a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views at the top are worth every step. I highly recommend embarking on this hike either early in the morning to witness the day unfold in all its glory or in the evening to gaze at the star-studded sky.

Each visit to Ponderosa State Park is a unique experience, and I can't wait for my next adventure here.

Interesting Finds At Ponderosa State Park

And if you're planning a trip to Ponderosa State Park, don't forget to bring your canoe!

Trust me, paddling out on the water is one of the best ways to soak in the serene beauty of the park. And if you don't want to haul your own canoe, no worries—they have rentals available. You'll get to fish, explore, and just have a blast.

And even though it's not exactly a beach destination, there are plenty of spots where you can dip your toes in the water or cast a fishing line. But remember, it's a natural habitat, so keep your eyes peeled for wildlife.

During my last visit, I spotted bears, deer, and red foxes. It was such an incredible experience! I definitely recommend Ponderosa State Park in McCall. I promise you won't regret it!

Getting There

Getting to Ponderosa State Park is fairly easy since it’s a recreation area right on the lake.

Located right off Davis Avenue, you can get to the Ponderosa State Park Visitor Center as a starting point and then make your way into the park.

Cost

The cost is really dependent on what you plan to do here. I recommend checking their website for current fees.

Local Tips

  • They have a winter access fee of $6 per person or a season pass available of $50 for a person or $75 for a couple.
  • I enjoy the primitive campsites, but if you have to have electricity or other amenities, they do offer them. I would suggest booking as early as you can, especially for the early summer months and weekends.
  • If you use the website, you can see what’s available for the day you plan to go and “pick a campsite” which is a nice little feature.
  • Take pictures of everything. You’ll love having these memories.
