One Saturday morning, I ventured out onto the water before sunrise to immerse myself in the striking surroundings and try my hand at fishing. The experience was truly rejuvenating, setting the tone for a remarkable day ahead.

I had a fantastic time exploring the wildlife and taking part in outdoor adventures in McCall, Idaho. The Payette Lake area offers numerous hiking trails that take you deep into the park, some of which are quite dense. These trails immerse you into the wildlife habitat, providing excellent opportunities for spotting birds, deer, and even bears—just be cautious and stay safe!

During our family vacation, we also took some time to unwind by hiking near the Payette River and exploring the surrounding trails. We had the chance to witness awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets, which added to the tranquility and beauty of this part of McCall.

And thankfully, you can rent just about everything you need for water-based adventures, from paddleboards and jet skis to kayaks, canoes, and sailing equipment. If you'd like an expert-guided experience, consider booking a tour boat to explore the area with a knowledgeable captain on board.

Payette Lake is located right off Ponderosa State Park. You can get there off Route 55.

Local Tips

  • The mountain backdrop is fantastic for selfies first thing in the morning as the sun rises.
  • Check out Ponderosa State Park, which extends about 1,000 acres on a peninsula that juts out into the lake.
  • You can fish from the shoreline, though I found that fishing from a sailing boat was more productive and a bit more relaxing.
  • The glacier that carved out this lake was over 1,000 feet high.
