About

Just a thirty-minute drive from Huntsville is Decatur, home to what many consider the best barbecue in Alabama. Big Bob Gibson's Bar-B-Q (BBGBBQ) has been perfecting the art of Southern-style barbecue since 1925.

Our story's hero is founder Bob Gibson, a railroad worker whose penchant for BBQ had him cooking on the weekends. Prior to 1925, Bob used a hand-dug pit for cooking, and word of his hickory-smoked delicacies spread, becoming the talk of the town.

Soon, lines formed at his place, so he upgraded to a kiln-style cooker and nailed oak planks to trees for tables. As his reputation as a pit master grew, Bob quit the railroad to focus on his BBQ.

In 1952, Big Bob settled on the 6th Avenue location his family currently manages. Over the ensuing decades, the restaurant has earned 18 world championship titles. According to Bob's grandson Don McLemore, Big Bob also created Alabama sauce or white sauce. This tasty BBQ sauce pairs with poultry and has become a favorite for dipping French fries.

The iconic BBQ is near other Decatur landmarks like the Cook Museum of Natural Science. And being only thirty minutes from Huntsville, you could combine a U.S. Space & Rocket Center visit with an award-winning pit BBQ meal!

Big Bob Gibson's Bar-B-Q has become a culinary destination in Alabama with a menu steeped in history and Southern pride.

Vibe

While a fire destroyed the original 1952 building, the current 6th Avenue location is next door. Also on site is the original neon pole sign rescued from the blaze. The vintage sign adds soul to the classic red-brick facade, wood trim, and tin roof.

Inside is where old-school amenities blend with contemporary elements to create a classic BBQ vibe. Wooden tables with barbecue sauces and paper napkins are beneath a coffered ceiling. Wood-paneled walls with vintage photographs remind diners of its Decatur roots. The BBQ trophies are a reminder of the restaurant's pedigree.

The atmosphere is lively, like being in someone's home for the holidays. From local politicians and contractors to the staff and vacationers, everyone is courteous and welcoming, further adding to the allure.

With its humble beginnings and championship barbecue, BBGBBQ offers a vibe that must be experienced to be believed.

Big Bob Gibson's Bar-B-Q: Menu & Drinks

While two locations in Decatur offer similar menus, we'll focus on the 6th Avenue spot.

With so many soul-satisfying options, it's impossible to list them all! But we'll showcase some must-tries when you visit.

A standout is any of the chicken options smothered in Alabama white sauce. This tangy, peppery mayonnaise-based sauce, created by Big Bob, complements the slow-smoked juicy chicken.

The sandwich options offer hickory-smoked delights like pulled pork. It features mounds of pit-style pork with coleslaw or lettuce and tomato. You can also try smoked turkey, brisket, and a hot dog!

When famished after a morning at Huntsville Botanical Garden or Earlyworks Children's Museum, try any of the hearty plates and combos. The Smoked Chicken Wing Platter delivers seasoned, smoked, crispy wings smothered in your choice of sauce. It comes with two sides and a roll.

The Big Bob Gibson Combo St. is a meat lover's dream come true with two sides and a roll! This filling feast features St. Louis cut spare ribs and either pulled pork, beef brisket, smoked turkey, or quarter chicken.

The pies are another must-try. They are made daily at the crack of dawn and feature sky-high meringue. Choices include coconut, chocolate, lemon icebox, peanut butter, and pecan.

When it comes to drinks, Southern sweet tea is a consistent crowd-pleaser. You'll also find soft drinks, lemonade, and milk.
