About

Zilker Metropolitan Park is truly a treasure right in the heart of Austin, and this huge natural oasis (over 351 acres) has a lot to offer. Named after Andrew Jackson Zilker, who donated the land in 1917 to the city—Zilker  Park is the oldest metropolitan park in Texas.

Mr. Zilker was a local banker and had one of the first ice factories in the city. He also served as Alderman. Ultimately, his 40-acre ranch was given to the city, including the Barton Springs area, with the goal of helping the community and schools.

In fact, most of the development of the park occurred in the 1930s and was supported financially by the New Deal programs.

Today, there’s so much to see here. That includes the pool, Zilker Botanical Gardens, Austin Nature and Science Center, the Butler Hike and Bike Trail (which is so beautiful during the fall months), and the Barton Creek Trail, perfect for a relaxing walk.

Our family visits on a routine basis because there is plenty to do and lots to explore for those that love nature.

Whether you want to bring a packed lunch and then take a long walk around the park to check out the various habitats or have some fun in the Barton Springs pool, Zilker Park offers everyone something fun to do!

Fun Facts About Zilker Metropolitan Park

There’s so much to do here you’ll want to make this a frequent trip. If you do, we suggest getting the membership so you can save some money.

Also, make sure to use the shuttle! The Silker Shuttle is free to use and helps you to get from the parking garage into the park. It’s virtually a must for those visiting for holidays when it’s warm and crowded.

For smaller children, the Zilker Playscape is a must. There’s lots of running to do here.

And for teens, we love the disc golf course (a family favorite because it is a bit more challenging than others). There are also five volleyball courts. Keep in mind if you plan to have a tournament, you’ll want to reserve them in advance of your stay.

There are a lot of facilities in the park (you will love the architecture if you love older structures). This includes the Girl Scout Lodge, ZXilker Hillside Theater (we love to catch some of the plays and performances during the summer nights here), and the Umlauf Sculpture Gardens.

You’ll often find events taking place here, too, including the Austin City Limits Music Festival, the Trail of Lights (which is a vibrant and beautiful nature experience), and the Zilker Park Kite Festival in the spring.

With so many incredible things to do at Zilker Metropolitan Park in Highland Lakes, TX, you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of time to explore!

Getting There

If you are coming from outside of Austin, take I-35 into Austin. Ultimately you’ll want to get to Route 1. There are signs everywhere. Get off at Barton Springs Road and follow it along to the park’s entrance (there are a few of them.)

Cost

There is a parking fee of $7 for Saturdays, Sundays, and all holidays from March through September.
