Inner Space Cavern

Not discovered until 1963, when a Texas Highway Department core drilling team accidentally stumbled upon them while conducting highway construction, this unique natural wonder attracts thousands of visitors each year. 

Prior to their discovery, the existence of the Inner Space Caverns was unknown and had been hidden underground for millions of years. As soon as they were discovered, experts from the University of Texas at Austin were called in to explore the caverns and conduct research on its geological formations.

Formed over 10,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch, the caverns were created by the erosion of limestone rock and acidic groundwater. Over time, this process led to the formation of various geological features such as stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and columns—hence the cool upside-down look! 

According to archaeologists, the cave was used by prehistoric animals such as the extinct giant sloth and the saber-toothed tiger. In fact, scientists found evidence of their remains, indicating that the caverns were an important habitat for these early creatures.

And to honor this, the Inner Space Caverns commissioned an artist to paint these incredible creatures onto one of the walls. 

In 1964, the Inner Space Caverns opened to the public for guided tours. 

Since then, the caverns have become a popular tourist attraction and educational destination for visitors from all over the world. And over the years, many improvements and updates have been made to enhance the visitor experience.

Getting There

The drive from Austin to Inner Space Caverns is approximately 30 miles and takes 40-45 minutes, depending on traffic. 

It's always a good idea to check traffic and weather conditions before setting out on your trip so that you can plan accordingly. Once you reach the caverns, follow the directional signs and staff instructions for an enjoyable experience.
